D&T Product Design - GCSE at Hurstmere School
What is Product Design all about? This course is designed for those that want to design and make products with creativity and originality using a range of materials and techniques. Packaging, labelling and instructions are encouraged as part of the complete design proposal and advertising, points of sale, etc can be used to supplement the making experience and help create products that are designed for their commercial viability. It develops both problem solving skills as well as an understanding of the manufacturing and advertising industries. Pupils learn to design and make a product (or re-design an existing product to improve it) and can then design the marketing to go with it. Projects can be made using any type of suitable material including plastic, wood, metal or even textiles. The marketing side could be a package, set of instructions or a point of sale display stand. The emphasis of the course is on commercial product design, so whatever projects you decide on; you will need to show how they will be manufactured in industry. Course Content: The course covers various graphical techniques as well as looking at the commercial production processes of manufacturing plastics. Designing and making is an important part of the course and skills will be developed through two mini projects before the commencement of coursework in the summer of year 10. Controlled Assessment: Controlled assessment is 60% of the final GCSE grade. This will take the form of a single design and make project that will last a year. Exam: There are no tier boundaries. This is a two hour exam and is 40% of the final grade
