Travel and Tourism BTEC Extended Certificate at Gateacre School

Course description

Do you enjoy going on holiday? Are you interested in travel? Do you want a job in which you will be involved in helping people to enjoy themselves? Do you prefer being assessed by class work and projects rather than exams? If you have answered YES to any of these questions then Travel and Tourism BTEC is the course for YOU.

This is a practical course assessed mainly by research-based coursework. It is the equivalent of 2 GCSEs A* - C. There is a strong business element making the qualification suitable for people who wish to move into either employment, training or further education. There may also be the opportunity to increase the qualification to BTEC Diploma which is the equivalent to 4 GCSEs A*-C.

Course content

THREE compulsory units

  • The UK Travel & Tourism Sector
  • Understanding Customer Service in Travel and Tourism
  • Understanding the Nature and Effects of World Travel

THREE Specialist Unit

  • Developing Customer Service Skills in Travel and Tourism
  • Worldwide Holiday Planning
  • Holiday Planning


This is done by internally assessed assignments and external examinations. Final grades are awarded Pass, Merit, and Distinction. All units contain a variety of different delivery methods including group work, outside speakers, independent research, class work and discussions.

Future opportunities

As this is a vocational course the aim is to make it as real life as possible. As a result outside speakers will come and talk about their experiences and also there will be opportunities for trips. Previous trips have included, Chester Zoo, Alton Towers, Liverpool City Centre, Trafford Centre and many many more.
