Site Carpentry - Manx Craft Apprenticeship at Isle of Man College

Course description

These apprenticeships combine studying for a Construction Diploma at Level 1 & 2 and National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) at levels 2 and/or 3, with site-based experience. The scheme is run in collaboration with the Department of Economic Development's Training Services, which provides the apprentice/employer with grant support for the period of the apprenticeship.

In the Construction Industry, Site Carpenters fit most of the wooden parts of buildings including floor joists, floor boards, roof timbers, cupboards, windows and doors. You will be working with specialised tools and need to work accurately and carefully. You will be part of a team working on site and need to be able to work at heights.

Course content

Both the Construction Diploma and NVQ courses involves the study of theoretical knowledge and the development of practical skills that enable you to perform to industrial standards in a specific craft occupation.

Students with GCSE grades of E or lower in English/Maths will undertake Functional Skill lessons as part of their apprenticeship. Students that have a GCSE grade D in English/Maths will be expected to re-sit the relevant subject.

Entry requirements

You must be in employment and registered with the Department of Economic Development.

You will need to have a minimum of 2 GCSEs grade D including English or equivalent (e.g. City & Guilds 6219 at merit grade and English functional skills at level 2).



The Diploma has a series of formal theory tests throughtout the year culminating with the final exams in the theory and practical aspects of the course. Once the Diploma is completed students progress onto their NVQ.
During the NVQ you will be continally assesed on the theory and practical competence throughout the course, building a portfolio of evidence that also includes any practical you have undertaken in the workplace.
