Hair and Beauty - Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Make-up Artistry (New for September 2019) at Wakefield College

Course description

This programme is designed to equip learners with the skills in Hair and Make-up Artistry at Level 2. The course gives learners a chance to develop their skills in a range of hair and makeup artistry combined. This programme is an exciting opportunity to progress in to the industry or progress on to study media make-up or hairdressing at Level 3.

Course content

- Dress and finish hair services
-Anatomy and physiology for make-up artists
-Total look for competition work
-Face and body art painting
-Fashion and editorial make-up

Throughout this qualification, learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology also health and safety. They will also develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to plan for and provide make-up applications. Also, hair preparation services, fashion and editorial make-up and face and body painting. Students will develop their abilities in continuity services are adhered to for make-up application and hair services, whilst developing abilities to produce a total look for competition work. Learners will also develop their communication and customer service skills, problem solving, team working and research skills will be developed.

How you will learn

A variety of teaching and learning methods such as observing demonstrations, using online resources and hands-on experience of using hair and make-up artistry techniques.


Entry requirements

5 GCSEs A*-D or 9-3
Level 1 Hairdressing, plus Level 1 Functional Skills in English and Maths.


You will need to produce a portfolio and you will have graded practical assessments (50%), external examinations (30%) and graded synoptic assessment (20%)

Financial information

Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, and residentials, which are payable by all students.

Any student registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and subsequently withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any re-sit examination will incur a cost.

Different fees apply to international/overseas students and those studying this qualification as a standalone course.

As a hair and make-up artist, learners could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts, which include:

- Product manufacturing and training

Whilst the main purpose of this qualification is to prepare learners for employment, learners may choose to develop their knowledge and skills further by completing a specialist qualification at Level 3 in one or more of the following areas:
- Theatrical and media make-up
- Hairdressing

      The Castleford Campus (previously known as the skillsXchange) houses the College’s provision in Construction, Motor Vehicle, Engineering, Hair and Beauty, IT and some Care and replaces the training which was previously offered at the College’s Whitwood Campus.

      Located at Junction 32 of the M62 between Castleford and Pontefract, the site is well known for Xscape, the indoor ski slope whose building houses a 14-screen cinema, bowling alley, climbing wall, sports facilities and restaurants. The Campus is situated directly next to the Asda in Glasshoughton.

      A learning resource centre, equipped with the very latest in technology, is a superb place for individual study, or to relax and use the internet. The Centre overlooks the large external courtyard, where students can mix, mingle and chill.

      In state-of-the-art hair and beauty salons, including a nail bar, we are training the next generation of hairdressers and beauticians. These professional salons offer live training environments to our students, with treatments for both men and women available at affordable prices. There are also industry standard facilities for the study of construction and engineering, motor vehicle and electrical courses.
