Course description

At Worsley College we have brand new working salons equipped with industry standard equipment, to prepare students for future employability within the industry.

We work closely with industry experts and brands to ensure that we are using the latest techniques, equipment and products. Our modern real-life working salons provide students with the opportunity to work on real clients. The salon is open to members of the public for great value haircuts, colours and beauty treatments using exclusive salon ranges.

Level 1 City & Guilds Introduction to Hair & Beauty                                     1 Year

Level 2 City & Guilds Diploma in Beauty Therapy                                        1 Year

Level 2 City & Guilds Diploma inTechnical Certificate in Hairdressing         1 Year 

Level 2 City & Guilds Diploma VRQ in Media Make Up                               1 Year

Level 3 City & Guilds Diploma VRQ Beauty Therapy Techniques               1 Year

Course content

If you wish to study beauty units may include:

  • Facial Skincare
  • Nail treatments
  • Hair removal
  • Body massage
  • Self-tanning
  • Facial and body electrotherapy treatments
  • Make-Up

If decided to study hairdressing, depending on your level, the types of skills you will cover will include:

  • Shampooing and conditioning hair
  • Styling and dressing hair
  • Colouring hair
  • Perming & cutting techniques
  • Client consultation and reception duties

If you wish to study media make-up you may cover the following techniques and skills:

  • Period make-up
  • Natural, party, fashion and beauty make-up
  • Make-up for performers
  • Special effects such as casualty and aging techniques
  • Body painting
  • Airbrushing including HDTV
  • Business management and freelancing
  • Skills development and portfolio building


You will be assessed by practical assessments, online exams and assignments. During your studies you will build a portfolio of evidence.

Future opportunities

Many students gain employment as a hairdresser or beauty therapist in salons, leisure centres and cruise ships, or become self-employed. Some students chose to undertake further study in areas such as salon management or teaching. Media make-up students who successfully complete this course may choose to progress onto other make-up, prosthetics and animatronics techniques. Other students may choose to seek employment within the beauty, fashion, media or photgraphic industries.
