Manchester United Leaders Elite Programme at Eccles Sixth Form College

Course description

Learn and develop your footballing skills with an exciting partnership between the Manchester United Foundation and Eccles Sixth Form College. This innovative course will take place at the college and is designed to develop sports leaders of the future. The course gives you the opportunity to gain valuable leadership experience, as well as an insight behind the scences at a Premier League football club.

As part of the football academy you will compete for the college in local and national leagues and cups, building on our proud achivements as the current holders of the Manchester County Cup for both men and women. Our most talented players will have the opportunity to gain national recognition by representing England colleges in the Annual Home Nations competition.

Course content

The course will allow you to develop coaching skills and gives you work based opportunities. On completion of the course you will receive some of the following qualifciations depending on the route you take:

  • BTEC National Diploma in Sport, Level 2 and Level 3
  • Extended Diploma
  • 1st4Sport FA Certificate in Coaching Football, Level 1 and 2
  • NVQ Level 2 in Activity Leadership
  • Sports Leaders Award in Community Sports Volunteering
  • FA First Aid Certificate
  • FA Safeguarding Children Award
  • FA Coaches Licence


The majority of units are assessed by assignments and projects. Some units are externally assessed by the awarding body at some levels there is a small unit examination.

Future opportunities

You can gain employment in a coaching role or go on to study sports at a higher level. The course can lead to possible careers in coaching, personal training, leisure centre management, sports tutoring, the armed forces or sports event management. Our footballing pathways allow our talented players to progress into semi-professional football with local clubs
