Dry Lining Apprenticeship level 2 at Sheffield College

Course description

This apprenticeship will train you to work on a construction site or domestic and commercial premises installing dry finishes such as plasterboard and wall board to given specifications; fixed and joined together ready to receive decorative finishes.

Course content

The whole programme takes from 18 to 24 months to complete. You will mainly learn on the job, but the apprenticeship also includes 20% off-the-job training.

You will spend four days a week working with you on site as a trainee and the other one day a week in College building their skills and knowledge. Whilst at College, you will receive training to cover the technical diploma units of the qualification.

  • Health, safety and welfare in construction
  • Principle of building construction, information and communication
  • Install suspended ceiling systems
  • Install partitions Install wall linings and encasement systems
  • Fix sheet materials using direct bond method
  • Apply taping & jointing systems to plasterboard
  • Understand specialist systems for dry lining and interiors laying sand and cement screeds

The technical diploma is assessed through unit theory tests and practical end tests carried out in the College’s workshop.

For the NVQ, assessment involves building a portfolio of evidence gathered in the workplace which demonstrates that you have covered the range of skills required. We will support you with regular one-to-one visits by a trained assessor every six to eight weeks. These visits will cover one-to-one support and individual learning, as well as observations to assess your competencies in the workplace and a review of your portfolio of evidence.

4 GCSEs at grade 3 or above including English Langauge and Maths

Assessment

Work-based assessments throughout the course and theory and practical tests at College

Future opportunities

At the end of your apprenticeship, you will be able to work as a competent dry liner and should be in a position to develop more advanced skills.

Successful completion of this course enables learners to apply for the CSCS Blue Skilled Worker card.

      The Sheffield College City campus is a great place to be and perfectly located just a 10 minute walk from the city centre for your dinner time shop, and just 5 minutes from the train station.


      Our City campus boasts a sustainable, glass atrium that is 7 floors high and flooded with natural light. From lunch in The Refectory and with an outdoor terrace overlooking the city, the facilities include an aviation air cabin, catering kitchens, hair and beauty salons, science laboratories, dental technology laboratories, a sports hall, high tech childcare teaching facilities, construction workshops and a children’s nursery.


      Many students study catering at City so there’s always something tasty on the menu from ‘Grab n Go’, the student run restaurant The Silver Plate, or something to take away from the bakery.

      By Car

      From the M1, take Junction 33 onto the Sheffield Parkway, which merges into the A61.

      At the large roundabout, take the third exit sign posted A61.

      Continue on A61, keeping the train station on your left, until you spot a McDonalds restaurant.

      Just before the McDonalds take a left onto Granville Road.

      The entrance to the college is approximately 150 metres up Granville Road, on the right hand side.

      Parking

      Car parking facilities at City campus are limited to Blue Badge holders only – please see Disabled Go for more detailed access information.

      The nearest public parking is the Grosvenor Casino (pay and display) – just 5 a minute walk from the college. This can be accessed by continuing along the A61/Queen’s Road and taking the first left onto Duchess Road.

      Additional car parking can be found at Q-Park, Sheffield Train Station.

      By Train

      Sheffield Train Station is only a 10 minute walk from City Campus, and provides excellent connections to nearby towns and further afield cities.

      By Tram

      The Sheffield College is so well serviced by trams we even have a stop named after us! The nearest tram stop to City campus is Granville Road/The Sheffield College.

      Trams heading towards Halfway (Blue Line) stop right outside the college, whilst those coming from the opposite direction (heading towards Malin Bridge) stop just across the road.

      By Bus

      Again, being so close to the city centre you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to bus travel to college. The central bus terminal is only a 10 minute walk, and the 120 bus travelling to Crystal Peaks stops just two minutes away.

      By Scooter/Motorcycle/Bike

      City Campus had parking available for both scooters and motorcycles, as well as secure bike storage. Please speak to Student Services to register and gain access to the cycle storage.
