Technical Theatre Extended Diploma level 3 at Leicester College

Course description

The course covers all the behind-the-scenes roles involved in backstage technical theatre and concert production. You will help run internal and external shows at our professional city centre venue, the Sue Townsend Theatre, learning on the job to gain the skills you need to get work in this booming market. This programme is two years but takes place as two separate qualifications. Students need to pass year one to progress to year two. If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme. Please note, the course is free for 16-18 year olds, but there may be a fee for students who are 19 or over.

Course content

Over the two years you will cover aspects of stage management, lighting, video projections and sound equipment, and you will learn the importance of how the these areas work together. You will also look at production arts planning; the history of performance; health and safety; and working for yourself in the industry. The structure of the course allows you to specialise in the areas which interest you the most, such as stage lighting, stage management, scenery construction/set design or live sound. Year two follows on from the content in year one, but more in depth, and it introduces new skills such as video projection mapping and lighting design.

Entry requirements

Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 4 (C) or above is required. You will be invited to attend a welcome event and take part in an audition. This is to ensure that we place you on the right programme. You are required to show an interest in backstage working. Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19 who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.

Assessment is via coursework completed over the two years. This course is highly practical, with an emphasis on doing and reflecting, often in a working blog format. Other assessment methods include presentations, sound and lighting design, plots, and reports.

Financial information

Material fee £20.00. £40 materials fee. This covers a black kit for working backstage and, potentially, a trip to a trade show.
