Sport BTEC Diploma level 3 at Leicester College

Course description

This is an academic qualification that will allow students to gain specific skills and knowledge relating to the field of Sport and Exercise Science. This is an ideal course for those looking to progress on to higher education as it contains relevant units. If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme.

Course content

The qualification includes units such as: anatomy, physiology and psychology, these are mandatory units and are assessed externally. In addition there are other units which are assessed internally these are sports coaching, research methods and biomechanics. In addition, Functional Skills or GCSE may be studied alongside the main qualification. The focus of the course is to prepare students to move on and leave with the equivalent of three A level's.

Entry requirements

Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 4 (C) or above is required, along with another two GCSE subjects at Grade C (4) or above. Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19, who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.


Currently all units are assessed through coursework, which could involve written essays, presentations, verbal interviews or practical assessments. Please note the awarding body is looking at introducing exams in two units.

Financial information

Material fee £120.00. You will be required to purchase uniform at an additional cost. This will be discussed at interview.

Future opportunities

Upon successful completion of this course, you can progress to the second year of the programme (Extended Diploma) and then to university to study a sports-related course. Students can progress into a range of careers including roles within the sports coaching, health and fitness, sports development, leisure management and personal well-being industries.
