Performing Arts (Acting) BTEC Diploma level 3 at Leicester College
This course is about giving you opportunities to perform and to prepare you for the creative industry. You will also develop the vocational skills and professional practice required to perform well. Our highly qualified staff - many with a strong professional background working in theatre, film and television - will be dedicated to giving you those skills. This course is studied in one year and allows you to achieve a level 3 90 Credit Diploma in Performing Arts (Acting). On the course, you will study a range of theatre styles and practitioners, and engage in a vibrant range of performance opportunities. If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme.
The course involves a variety of core and optional units which are related to the creative industry. The programme is structured through three practical performance projects which examine different approaches, styles and techniques as well as individual units. On the course you will perform in a friends and family evening; a devised project; a performance workshop project; and a scripted play based on a contemporary playwright. Additional subjects include improvisation, movement, voice, and the development of musical theatre skills. Performances will take place in our own Sue Townsend Theatre based in Leicester city centre.
Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 4 (C) or above is required. You will be invited to attend a welcome event and an audition: this is to support your careers choice and ensure that we place you on the right programme. Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19 who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.
Assessment is via coursework and performance. You will need to demonstrate in your work that your skills and understanding are sufficient to pass each unit or achieve higher grades.Your assignments are assessed internally by the College, and standards are verified by Edexcel. You will be assessed in a variety of ways including rehearsal, performance, workshops, journals, projects, portfolios, blogs, presentations, and essays.
Material fee £40.00. There are theatre trips and visits from practitioners throughout the year which form part of the course and come at an additional expense. Female learners are required to purchase a rehearsal skirt which will be supplied by the College.Approximate costs for kit are: £35 (men); £70 (women).
Once you have successfully completed the course you will be eligible to study on the level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing Arts (Acting). Following the completion of your level 3 Extended Diploma you will be able to apply to university and drama school. Each year some of our students achieve a place in a top drama school to continue their training, and many of our students progress to university-level courses. Some of our students stay at Leicester College to study the acting foundation degree before progressing onto our BA (Hons) Performing Arts. No-one can guarantee you success in this business, but your hard work and dedication can take you a long way towards some exciting goals. Realistically it is rare to progress directly from a level 3 course into the acting profession without further training.
