Extended Diploma Performing Arts (Acting) Year 2 at Leicester College

Course description

This course is about giving you opportunities to perform and to prepare you for the creative industry. You will also develop the vocational skills and professional practice required to perform well. Our highly qualified staff - many with a strong professional background working in theatre, film and television - will be dedicated to giving you those skills. The course involves a variety of core and optional units which are related to the creative industry. The programme is structured through four practical performance projects over the year, which examine different approaches, styles and techniques as well as covering individual units.

Course content

You will devise and participate in a TIE (Theatre in Education) project which will be toured around local schools; perform in a contemporary theatre project; and take part in a final major production which will take place at the end of the year in our Sue Townsend Theatre. You will study Film and TV acting to broaden your skills. In addition to the project work, you will study professional audition technique which will help prepare you for your auditions at university and drama school, as well as a theory unit which looks at how to run yourself as a business in the professional performing arts industry. Over the course, you will gain an in-depth knowledge of the creative industries and understand what you will need to start a career in this industry.

Entry requirements

Students will have completed a level 3 90 Credit Diploma or equivalent in performing arts/acting. Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 4 (C) or above is required. You will be invited to attend a welcome event and an audition: this is to support your careers choice and ensure that we place you on the right programme. Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19 who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.

Assessment

Assessment is via coursework and performance. You will need to demonstrate in your work that your skills and understanding are sufficient to pass each unit or achieve higher grades.Your assignments are assessed internally by the College, and standards are verified by Edexcel. You will be assessed in a variety of ways including rehearsal, performance, workshops, journals, projects, portfolios, blogs, presentations, and essays.

Financial information

Material fee £0. There are theatre trips and visits from practitioners throughout the year which form part of the course and come at an additional expense. There is a mandatory kit requirement which consists of black joggers, black t shirt, and black indoor rehearsal shoes/jazz shoes. Female learners are required to purchase a rehearsal skirt which will be supplied by the College.

Future opportunities

As this qualification is the equivalent of three A levels, once you have successfully completed the course you will be eligible to study for a degree at a university or drama school. Each year some of our students achieve a place in a top drama school to continue their training, and many of our students progress to university-level courses. Some of our students stay at Leicester College to study the acting foundation degree before progressing onto our BA (Hons) Performing Arts. No-one can guarantee you success in this business, but your hard work and dedication can take you a long way towards some exciting goals. Realistically it is rare to progress directly from a level 3 course into the acting profession without further training.
