Engineering BTEC Diploma level 1 (16-18) at Leicester College
If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme. You will study the basic principles of electronics/mechanical and manufacturing engineering and related subjects with a strong focus on improving literacy, numeracy and ICT skills. A pass in the level 1 Diploma together with GCSE grade 3 (or functional skills level 1) in Maths and English or above is required to progress to level 2.
There will be an emphasis on learning by practical application of skills and as such there is a large element of time dedicated to practical workshop sessions. You will develop skills through practical problem solving, working on your own and as part of a team, as well as studying the basic theory of the related engineering subjects. There will be a strong focus on timekeeping, attendance of classes and participation in your learning.
Standard entry requirements for this course are one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance in your last place of study or work. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 1/2 (E/F/G) or above is required. Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19, who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.
Assessment is by practical competence in mechanical and electronics workshops, written tests, assignments and written exams for Functional Skills.
Material fee £150.00. You will be expected to supply and wear personal protective equipment (workshop uniform) when carrying out practical activities in the workshops, which should consist of black work boots, plain navy work wear combat trousers, a navy polo shirt and a navy sweatshirt for colder days. There should be no deviation from the colour scheme and the kit would be expected to cost between £45 and £50.
On successful completion of your level 1 Diploma, you will have the opportunity to specialise further, in one of four Level 2 programmes: Automotive Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering or Technology. Alternatively you may seek an apprenticeship with local businesses or through the links on the college website. This course offers the first step in preparing learners for entry into careers such as technicians or junior engineers in a wide variety of roles within different sectors of the engineering industry.
Apply online via UCAS Progress or the College website. You will need details of your qualifications, a reference, and a personal statement to complete your application. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to a Welcome Event at the College to meet your tutors, learn more about your chosen course of study and tour the facilities.
