Health and Social Care Extended Certificate level 2 at Leicester College

Course description

This course combines the BTEC level 2 extended certificate in health and social care with GCSE's in English and maths. You will explore a broad and engaging curriculum that will provide you with practical and investigative skills to encourage your wider knowledge in the health and social care sector. The qualification is particularly suited to post-16 learners who have the relevant interest and aptitude to progress in this sector as the course aims to inspire and enthuse you by strengthening your ability to work with others, improve your problem solving skills, develop your independent study, personal learning and thinking skills; all of which are essential skills and attributes prized by employers. A work placement in a health care setting is required as part of this course providing you with wider understanding and practical skills required for success in employment in the caring services as well as further study at level 3. If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme.

Course content

Units of study cover a wide variety of topics which prepare you for work, or further study in the health and social care sector. Topics for study include: lifespan development, health and social care values, social influences on health and well being. The programme will also help you to develop skills that are essential for the modern day workplace including team working, working to deadlines and presenting information effectively. If you have not yet achieved your English and Maths at GCSE grade C/4 or equivalent then you will also be timetabled to study English and maths classes too.

Entry requirements

Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 3 (D) or above is required. Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19, who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.


Assessment is continuous throughout the course, with two units having externally set synoptic exams that are externally marked. All other units are internally assessed units where evidence for assessment can be generated through a range of activities, including assignments, role play, practical performance and verbal presentations. Assessment is externally examined for both English and maths.

Future opportunities

Health and Social Extended Certificate at level 2 can lead you to seek employment within a wide range of junior job roles across the sector, for example in domiciliary care. Alternatively on successful completion and achievement of this course you have the choice, subject to fulfilling all entry requirements, to progress onto level 3 Diploma in health and social care or childcare. Alternatively you may want to go onto one of our trainee apprenticeships.
