Bench Joinery Diploma level 3 at Leicester College

Course description

This course is designed to offer progression from the Bench Joinery Diploma level 2. The Architectural Joinery Advanced Technical Diploma level 3 is for students who are interested in developing the specific technical and professional skills that will lead to employment in the construction industry. Students undertaking this course will explore a wide range of carpentry techniques that includes manufacturing curved joinery and manufacturing stairs with turns. There is a minimum requirement of 95% attendance. You must supply safety footwear/clothing and an identified tool kit. Technical drawing equipment and stationery are also necessary. If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme.

Course content

Students studying the Architectural Joinery Advanced Technical Diploma level 3 will cover the theoretical aspects of the subject and apply them to practical tasks. Compulsory topics include organising, planning and pricing construction work; and setting up and using fixed and transportable machinery. Students will also take the following units: manufacture curved joinery and manufacture stairs with turns. You will undertake English and maths, either at Functional or Skills or GCSE level, depending on your prior achievement. English, maths, work experience and modules relating to self-employment are an integral part of this study programme and will form a substantial part of your timetable for 16-18 yr olds.

Entry requirements

Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 95% attendance. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 4 (C) or above is required.

Assessment

To gain this qualification, candidates must successfully achieve the following assessments:• One externally-set, externally-moderated assignment• One externally-set, externally-marked exam, sat under examination conditions.

Financial information

Material fee £150.00. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) plus an identified tool kit will require purchasing. Approximate combined cost of £125. Previous Leicester College students may only require a top-up tool kit at a reduced cost. Individuals will also require stationery. There is a materials fee applicable to this course.

Future opportunities

This qualification helps prepare you for work in the construction industry specialising in the carpentry work area, with a specific focus on wood occupations, potential employment as an advanced apprentice or as a bench joiner/architectural joiner. You can also apply to the technical and professional qualification at level 3, the Construction Foundation National Diploma.
