Electrical Installation Technical Certificate level 2 at Leicester College

Course description

Developing practical skills and underpinning job knowledge to an Industry standard; there are mandatory electrical subjects that focus on how electricians undertake and complete work. Associated works such as installation, maintenance, servicing, Inspection and testing of electrical systems will be learnt using classrooms and workshops to develop a rounded college learning experience. If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme.

Course content

There are five units: health and safety in building services; principles of electrical science; electrical installations; installation of wiring systems; and understanding how to communicate with other within building services engineering. The units are achieved by both practical and theoretical study. Students are encouraged to seek a work placement during their studies.

Entry requirements

Standard entry to this course is one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance in your last place of study or work. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 3 or above (D), plus a further two GCSEs at grade 3 (D) or above, one must include a science. Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19 who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.


There will be continuous assessment throughout the programme and a final exam in later April to May.

Financial information

Material fee £115.00. Students will be required to purchase some basic equipment to support their learning and protect them during normal working practice in the workshop. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) plus an identified tool kit combined cost of £85. Previous Leicester College students may only require a top-up tool kit at a reduced cost. There may be an additional examination registration fee of approximately £155.00 if applicable.

Future opportunities

It has been designed to deliver a high level of occupational skills and provide a platform from which to progress through further learning or into employment. This vocational route at level 3 is a vital step towards becoming a competent electrician. After certification enrolment on to an appropriate level 3 programme is possible if employed or a guaranteed work placement is secured. Successful completion of the course may help in gaining employment in the plumbing industry.
