Plumbing Diploma level 1 at Leicester College

Course description

This qualification is for students wanting to learn the basic skills and knowledge involved in plumbing. The qualification covers a range of basic tasks and underpinning knowledge involved in plumbing. If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme.

Course content

Structure of the construction industry; fundamental safe working practices; environmental and sustainability measures in domestic dwellings; site preparation for working in the construction industry; above ground drainage; copper pipework; plastic pressure pipework; low carbon steel pipework; installation, repair and maintenance of plumbing systems; plumbing science. These components will enable a rounded basic experience to develop students towards their destination at the end of their one year programme.

Entry requirements

Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. You should have a GCSE in both English and maths at grade 2 or above (E/F) is required plus two further GCSEs at grade 2 or above including a science or technology based subject. Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19 who do not have formal English and maths qualifications.


You will be continuously assessed and have assignments. All work will be graded and checked for content as well grammatical errors. All work produced is designed to help the learner grow in confidence during their learning programme.

Financial information

Material fee £90.00. Approximate combined cost for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE ) and tool kit of £85. Previous Leicester College students may only require a top-up tool kit at a reduced cost.There may be an additional examination registration fee of approximately £110.00 if applicable.

Future opportunities

Successful completion of a level 1 study programme enables learners to progress to the following qualifications: level 2 Technical Certificate in Plumbing City & Guilds 8202-25 (with employment as an apprentice plumber); level 2 NVQ-Diploma in Plumbing and Heating (6189-11); level 2 NVQ diploma in Installing and-Maintaining Domestic Heating Systems (6189-21); or an apprenticeship.
