Construction BTEC Extended Diploma level 3 at Leicester College
The Extended Diploma is a one-year, top up full-time course, following from the Level 3 Foundation Diploma (year 1). It allows learners to progress into higher education, as well as supporting learners who want to progress directly to employment in roles in construction or a professional construction role, and higher apprenticeship If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme.
The qualification provides the knowledge, understanding and skills that will allow learners to progress to further education, or directly to employment or an apprenticeship in the construction sector. There are seven mandatory units, which cover the following aspects of construction: â€¢ construction principles â€¢ construction design â€¢ tendering and estimating â€¢ health and safety in construction â€¢ construction technology â€¢ projects in construction â€¢ surveying in construction. The mandatory units will introduce learners to personal responsibilities for health, safety and welfare, the industry and legislative requirements for health and safety, and the application of organisational processes and risk management to ensure compliance. They will also introduce learners to the skills needed for tendering and estimating within a project environment.
You will require 1 reference. It is desirable to demonstrate 90% attendance. You will also need a GCSE in both English and maths at grade 4 or above (C) and to have successfully completed year 1 programme the Level 3 Foundation Diploma.
Assessment is specifically designed to fit the purpose and objective of the qualification. It includes a range of assessment types and styles suited to vocational qualifications in the sector. There are three main forms of assessment that you need to be aware of: external, internal and synoptic. Most units in the sector are internally assessed and subject to external standards verification.

This qualification will prepare learners for direct employment in the construction and built environment sector, and is ideal if they wish to enter a particular specialist area of work, such as: â€¢ construction contracting technician â€¢ design technician â€¢ architectural technician â€¢ quality controller â€¢ site quality controller â€¢ building control/planning technician â€¢ quantity surveying technician. The optional units give learners the chance to learn about a particular aspect of construction in more detail, but because the mandatory content makes up two-thirds of the qualification, they will be prepared for all these roles whichever optional units they choose. There are many roles in this sector where recruitment is at graduate level. The qualification carries UCAS points and is recognised by higher education providers as meeting admission requirements to many relevant courses, for example: â€¢ BSc (Hons) in Construction Management - Leicester College â€¢ HNC/D in Civil Engineering â€¢ HNC/D in Building Services Engineering â€¢ HND in Construction and the Built Environment.
