Information Technology BTEC Certificate Entry level at Leicester College

Course description

If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme. The course introduces some IT skills in word processing, spreadsheets graphics software, personal development and how to get the best out of the Internet. There is also a large element of English and maths work to build skills to enable progression to level 1 courses.

Course content

Modules of IT skills: Using ICT Systems, Word processing, Spreadsheets, Digital photography, Graphics software and Finding information on the Internet. English work includes vocabulary building, grammar, punctuation and spelling. maths work includes handling money, and handling whole numbers. There will be an opportunity to develop your skill set: note-taking, planning, time-management and other self-development skills.

Entry requirements

Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. No formal qualifications are required. Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19, who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.


Assessment is via coursework completed over one year. You will need to evidence in your work that your skills and understanding are sufficient to pass each unit or achieve higher grades. If you have a disability you may be allowed additional time to complete the examination. If you have particular study requirements please tell us as soon as possible.

Financial information

Material fee £40.00. Trip fees will be payable in year as and when trips are organised. You need to top up your print credit to print your work.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of this entry level course you may apply to the BTEC Introductory Diploma level 1 course. You may also apply for Trainee positions in an IT or business-related areas. You may also apply towards a level 1 business course. It is important to make sure you also successfully complete the maths and English on the course.
