Creative Media BTEC Ext Diploma Level 3 Year 2 at Leicester College

Course description

This established BTEC Extended Level 3 Diploma in Creative Media course is the second year of a two year Extended Diploma. The programme area of digital arts offers this broad-based level 3 full-time course which covers media theory, research, video/TV production, radio news/music programming, marketing, graphic design, photography, journalism and magazine/web publishing. The extended diploma course is equivalent to three A levels. If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme. You are required to successfully complete the nine-unit, 90-credit first year in order to move into this second year and the full extended diploma.

Course content

During this second year, you will study units such as working to a brief - this unit aims to take the student through the whole process of working to a brief from initial negotiations, through the process of developing and realising ideas in liaison with the client to final self-evaluation on completion of the work. Critical approaches to creative media: this unit is about understanding and identifying audiences, and targeting specific media products at particular groups, reflecting relevant drivers. Other units include factual programme production for television; presentation techniques for broadcasting; music-based programming; digital communication; web authoring; and corporate and promotional programme production.

Entry requirements

Standard entry to this course requires: BTEC Level 3 90 Credit Diploma in Creative Media One good reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% or above attendance. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 4 (C) or above is required. Attendance at a Welcome day and a keen interest in a media field is essential. Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19 who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.

Assessment

All units are assessed through practical assignments.You will receive formative assessments and feedback that will inform you of the grade you are working towards. We will set targets that inform you how to improve. There are no examinations or external assessments on this course.

Financial information

Material fee £25.00. £50.00 to cover the costs of memory sticks, colour output and additional stationery items.

Future opportunities

This level 3 course allows successful students to progress either into the creative media industry or higher education across a range of media subjects including film, journalism, photography, copywriting, marketing, advertising, typography and other related subjects. The course equips students to enter the creative industries at a junior level. There will also be a an element of simulated work experience through live projects, competitions, and industrial assignments during year two of the course. Each year 95%-100% of students progress to university to study in their chosen specialism.
