Level 2 Diploma in Barbering at East Sussex College

Course description

During the course you will develop all the skills you need to become employed or self-employed as a junior barber.

Course content

Over the course of the year our professional and experience tutors will give you a thorough understanding of all the required elements you need to start your career as a barber. You will practise cutting techniques with scissors and clippers, learn how to carry out an effective client consultation, you will shampoo and condition hair, blow-dry and apply finishing products, cut and sculpt facial hair, and learn about health and safety in the salon environment. 

Learning is very hands on and will be carried out in our fully-equipped commercial salon at our Station Plaza campus.

Units covered during the year include:

  • Health and Safety
  • Shampooing and Conditioning
  • Basic cutting techniques
  • Blow-dry and finishing
  • Cutting facial hair
  • Client consultation

You may also choose to study a range of optional units to develop your learning further:

  • Changing men's hair colour
  • Creating basic patterns in hair
  • Perming
  • Reception duties 
  • Promoting products and services to clients

Entry requirements

To apply for this course you will need at least 4 A*-D / Grade 3, including English, maths and Science.

Future opportunities

Once you have successfully completed this course you will be able to start your career in the industry. You could work in a barber shop or become self-employed. Other options could be to start an apprenticeship or go on to one of our hairdressing courses.

With further training you could explore a number of other career opportunities including working in television, film, theatre, or media.
