Level 2/3 Football Development Academy at East Sussex College

Course description

You will use your passion for football to help you improve your own footballing skills and ability, develop a range of coaching techniques and learn about sports theories.

Course content

Our Football Academy is a one-year course, offering you a range of qualifications and the opportunity to play football on a full-time basis. You will join other squad members in for Pre-season training in July. Our professional coaches will help you to improve your fitness, during training sessions at Horntye Sports Complex and our fully-equipped gym. You will develop your own skills as a coach during an Football Association coaching course, you will learn anatomy and physiology during theory classes, and have the opportunity to play up to 22 matches a season for College and Hastings United teams. You will buy into our squad ethos and present yourself in a professional manner at all times.

  • BTEC qualification in Sport
  • FA Level 1/2 in Coaching
  • National Citizenship Award
  • Work Experience
  • English and maths
  • Football training and fitness
  • Opportunity to play for Hastings United U19's
  • Up to 22 matches per season

Our excellent links with professional football clubs and scouts mean that you may have the opportunity to be spotted and invited for trials. You will also have opportunities to develop your learning through trips and experienced guest speakers.

Entry requirements

4 GCSE's A*- D including English and maths. Equivalent Qualifications may be considered in exceptional circumstances.


You will be assessed throughout the year during exams, written assignments, and practical tests.

Future opportunities

Once you have successfully completed this course you can progress on to further levels of the academy programme or any other Level 3 Sports programmes with us. You could also gain more industry specific qualifications such as FA Level 2 Coaching or Refereeing qualification.

After completing the course, possible career options include: Playing Semi-professional football, becoming a football coach, refereeing, sports leader or recrational assistant.
