Level 2 Specialist Support in Teaching & Learning in Schools at East Sussex College

Course description

During this one-year course you will gain essential first-hand experience in the classroom environment to develop your skills as a teaching assistant.

Course content

Over the duration of the course you will be have the opportunity to observer and learn from experienced teaching professionals in a school setting. You will be able to develop key skills that will enable you to become an effective teaching support worker.

You will undertake a school placement for four days a week with the other day being timetabled at college. You learn all aspects of working in a classroom environment in line with the National Curriculum requirements, with particular focus on care and education.

  • Developing relationships
  • Promoting Positive Behaviour
  • Health and Safety
  • Observations
  • Safeguarding
  • Literacy and Numeracy

Entry requirements

You will need a minimum of: 4 GCSE's A*-D or Equivalent Qualification Progression from Level 1 including English at D grade and DBS check


Your assessments for this course will take place in the school and consist of portfolio based assignments.

Future opportunities

Once you have completed the course you may decide to progress onto to a higher level of study, starting the Level 3 qualification in 2 Specialist support in teaching and Learning in schools or perhaps train to become an Early Years Educator.

You may also start your career in the industry in a teaching support position, with the opportunity to specialise as an individual needs assistant.

Further information

There will be an expectation of a minimum of 4 days work experience in a relevant setting each week. College attendance is mandatory for all timetabled hours. A clear DBS will be required prior to starting the course.
