Level 1 Diploma in Plumbing & Electrical Installation at East Sussex College
Having gained a basic knowledge of plumbing from previous study, you will further develop your understanding and knowledge of the trade during our Level 1 course.
During the course you will be given a thorough introduction to the skills and knowledge required within the plumbing trade. Learning will take place in our purpose built plumbing workshop where you will learn the importance of safe working practice. You will build your knowledge and competence in working with copper and plastic piping, learn how to bend and join pipework, and understand the science of plumbing. Maths and English is also an important part of this course.
During the course you will cover topics including:
- Safe working practices
- Bending and joining copper pipe
- Steel and plastic pipework
- Above ground drainage
- Installation, repair and maintenance of plumbing systems
- Plumbing science
- Environmental and sustainability measures in domestic dwellings
You will need a minimum of: GCSE's D-E in English and maths or equivalent qualification or Diploma in Basic Construction Skills level 1. Good school report for attendance and attitude to work and completion of SCCH ‘Get to know day Assessment day'
Assessments will take place throughout the duration of the course. Practical tasks will make up 60% of the assessment and 40% will be made up of exams. Constructive feedback from your tutor will help you to improve and progress towards recognised industrial standards.
A range of specified PPE and a basic plumbing tool set will be required for this course and will cost approximately £125.
The PPE required will consist of safety boots, work trousers, navy/black polo shirt, gloves, hi-vis vest and safety glasses. There are also a number of opportunities throughout the year for various construction related trips which may also incur a cost.
On completion of the course you can progress onto the Level 2 Plumbing course or start an apprenticeship in plumbing.
With additional training you could then progress into employment as a Plumber, a Heating Engineer, an Air-conditioning and refrigeration systems engineer, or a Site Manager.
