Biology IB (Block C) at St Simon Stock Catholic School

Course description

This course is part of the IBCP Pathway and must not be chosen alongside A Levels.

An interest in life is natural for humans; not only are we living organisms ourselves, but we depend on many species for our survival, are threatened by some and co-exist with many more. The first organisms appeared on the planet over 3 billion years ago and, through reproduction and natural selection, have given rise to the 8 million or so different species alive today.

Course content

Biologists attempt to understand the living world at all levels using many different approaches and techniques. At one end of the scale is the cell, its molecular construction and complex metabolic reactions. At the other end of the scale biologists investigate the interactions that make whole ecosystems function. Evolution, genetics and physiology are just some of the syllabus components.

Entry requirements

The general entry for the IBCP is five Grade 4's and above at GCSE level. IB subjects have the option of a higher or standard level. All students will initially be put forward for the higher level and final entry will be decided after student enrolment on the course. It is highly recommended to have achieved a grade 5 in Biology OR 5-5 in combined at GCSE, in addition to 5’s in Maths and English.

Future opportunities

The “Pathways” focus on a specific career and suggest subject combinations to give the best experience, understanding and qualifications that would be required to follow suggested careers. Medical/Science related careers may be a more obvious but this also supports the counselling and research pathways. Like Biology A Level, there are many careers that can include a biological aspect.
