Course description

If you are interested in pursuing a career in motor vehicle service and repair, and car mechanics, this course is for you.The course will engage and motivate you, as you learn about the maintenance of motor vehicles and the various roles that are available in the retail motor industry. The course is practical and includes many visual questioning techniques which will stimulate and interest you. The learning outcomes are assessed by a variety of task-based assessments, observation, oral questioning and online assessments.During the course you will be given the opportunity to work on customers' cars. You will be encouraged to take responsibility for your own learning as this will help you to develop the skills to be mature and independent at work. You will be expected to be keen and interested enough to work hard without being continually monitored. You will also be expected to become more self-reliant and better organised as the course progresses.At the start of each unit the lecturer will explain to you about the unit, the teaching and learning you will experience and how you will be assessed.In order to pass the qualification, you must demonstrate the learning outcomes in the following three assessment elements:

  • IMI Awards Practical Assessments (or centre devised alternatives)
  • IMI Award Online External Testing
  • IMI Awards Phase Tests (or centre devised alternatives)

Entry requirements

You will need:

  • 3 GCSEs at grade 2 (E) or higher
You will be invited to an interview to help us ensure the course is right for you.
