Travel & Tourism - Level 3 (Extended Diploma) at College of West Anglia

Course description

If you are seeking a career in the worldwide travel and tourism industries, eventually leading to management either through job progression or higher education, this course is for you.This busy course comprises a series of modules and units. These will help to develop your personal skills, learn about and understand the business principles behind the industry sectors, learn about working in specific parts of the industry and even acquire some specific and practical knowledge and experience. Within the first year you will take four core units plus two specialist units: Core Units 

  • Investigating travel and tourism
  • The business of travel and tourism
  • The UK as a destination
  • Customer service in travel and tourism
Specialist Units
  • Long haul travel destinations
  • Retail travel operations
Those students aiming to complete the Extended Diploma course will need to undertake specialist units in addition to those listed above. These include:
  • Visitor attractions
  • European destinations
  • The cruise industry
  • Working as a holiday representative
In their second year of study students seeking to complete the Extended Diploma will complete an additional nine units from the following list:
  • Marketing travel and tourism products and services
  • Preparing for employment in the travel and tourism industry
  • The European travel market
  • Appeal and importance of UK visitor attractions
  • Tour operations
  • Roles and responsibilities of holiday reps
  • Investigating the cruise sector
  • Sustainable tourism
  • Tourism in rural areas
  • Entertainment for holiday makers
  • Hospitality operations in travel and tourism
  • Residential study visit and events
  • Conferences and exhibitions
You will also undertake a Level 2 Air Cabin Crew qualification.

Entry requirements

External Applicants You will need:

  • 5 or more GCSEs at Grade 4 (C) or higher, including English and Maths
Or:
  • A relevant Level 2 qualification
You will be invited to an interview to help us ensure the course is right for you.Internal ProgressionsYou will need:
  • Level 2 qualification at Merit or higher
  • English and/or Maths at Grade 4 (C) or higher
  • 3 other GCSEs at Grade 4 (C) or above

Assessment

This is a two-year programme and Extended Diploma courses have three achievement points. You will work towards the Subsidiary Diploma Qualification in the first year of the course and will have the opportunity to work towards either the Diploma or the Extended Diploma in the second year.Students undertake a series of vocational projects. These are delivered in formal classes and lectures, visits and case studies, own study in our learning centre and simulations. Assessment is continuously undertaken by lecturers, industry representatives and fellow students, covering the progress and process of a project as well as the final work.
