Level 3 Extended Diploma in Games, Animation & VFX Skills at Selby College

Course description

This course is offered in collaboration with the Art, Design & Media department. Employers have identified the skills that are crucial in these fast-moving digital industries. You will develop technical, artistic, mathematical and programming skills that are vital to the successful creation of any game, animation or visual effects sequence. The course will support your career and help prepare you for a wide range of potential jobs in creative and digital media. You’ll leave with both essential skills and a strong portfolio that demonstrates your potential, whether you decide to go straight into the workplace, study for a second year or take an Apprenticeship. All employers in every sector are looking for learners who can communicate, work well in a team and have good computation thinking. This is at the heart of this course.

Course content

 You will study a range of units over the two years, which include:

• The Games, Animation and VFX Industries

• Maths and Logic Fundamentals

• Animation and VFX Industries

• Fundamental Product Programming Skills

• Art Fundamentals

• Fundamental Animation Skills

• VFX Fundamentals for the Games

• 3D Tools: Principles and Practice

• Core Principles of Game Design

Please note: If you have not achieved a Grade 4 or above in GCSE English and/or Maths you will be required to continue studying these alongside your college course. You will be required to undertake a one-week work placement as part of the course.

Entry requirements

Standard Level 3 entry level requirements apply. There will be an expectation that you are enthusiastic and motivated to enter the creative digital sector.

Assessment

Two internally set and marked written exams, plus internally assessed and externally moderated assessment evidence.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of the course you may go on to the HNC/D in Computing or the HND in Art & Design at Selby College, university, an Apprenticeship or employment.
