Sport - Golf Academy ran in conjunction with Canterbury Golf Club at Spires Academy

Course description

Students will study BTEC Sport (Level 3) Extended Diploma. This course is ideal for people with aspirations to progress into the sports industry or to progress into Higher Education. The course is a combination of academic and practical sessions that will give you an insight into what's required to work in the sports industry.

Sport is more than a job, it requires a different level of commitment, so from day one, these themes will be used to educate and prepare you for employment. You will be expected demonstrate professionalism during your time at Spires. You will also be expected to wear your sports department uniform to all sessions, in line with many sports careers and conduct yourself in a manner that represents the industry, this will include; respect, teamwork and discipline.

During your programme you will have the opportunity to learn about a selection of integral subjects including anatomy and physiology, practical sport, sports coaching, officiating, fitness testing and training, sports psychology, sports nutrition, exercise and health, sports injuries and other areas related to the sports industry.

You will also gain skills in teamwork, communication, leadership, fitness, resilience, honesty, enthusiasm, commitment, discipline, respect as well as improving confidence. Students will train once a week at Canterbury Golf Club with Richard Wallis (ex GB and I, European tour, current Order of Merit Champion Kent and qualified for BMW Invitational at Wentworth Golf Club and British Masters). Students will also have the oppurtunity to gain coaching qualification ran in conjunction with Total Sports Coaching. Students will also compete in local and National level competitions. Students wishing to study a combination of BTEC Sport (Level 3), BTEC Health and Social Care (Level 3), BTEC Business Management (Level 3) are able to do so please just identify this on your application. The combination has to be equivlent to at least three A-Levels. 

Course content

Entry requirements

5 A-C (or 4+) including Maths and English. Failure to achieve these grades in English and Maths will result in you retaking these qualifications within the enrichment block outlined above. Ideally a grade 5 in GCSE PE/ BTEC Sport (Level 2) to at least Level 2 Pass. 

Assessment

Through a combination of exams, practical work, presentations, practical observations, a portfolio of assignments, case studies and tests. Students also undertaking external coaching qualifications will face separate assessments from the relevant National Governing Body. Completion of these qualifications whilst compulsary will not directly form part of the BTEC Sports (Level 3) qualification.

Future opportunities

You could gain a career such as a coach, trainer, nutritionist, referee or personal trainer. The course provides a work related programme of study so you could enter employment as this course helps you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers are looking for, especially in the sport and exercise sector. These courses will also prepare you for further education in areas of sport such as BTEC Higher Nationals in Sport and Exercise Sciences or related degree programmes. Strong links have been established with university programmes within the local university as well as scholarship programmes in the United States.
