Beauty at Oldham College

Course description

All new learners interested in Beauty will start on the Level 2 Technical Certificate in Beauty Therapy and will study theoretical aspects of the subject and apply them to practical tasks.

Core topics include:

  • Anatomy & Physiology
  • Principles of practice for Beauty Therapists
  • Hair removal treatments
  • Facial and skin analysis
  • Manicure treatments
  • Pedicure treatments
  • Light cured gel polish
  • Lash and brow treatments
  • Apply make-up services
  • Also Tanning treatments

Learners interested in the Level 2 Technical Certificate in Beauty Retail will study theoretical aspects of the subject and apply them to practical tasks.

  • Working in the beauty retail industry
  • Communication and customer service
  • Sales and promotional activities
  • Skin care for beauty retail
  • Make-up for beauty retail
  • Retail of additional products for beauty retail

The Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Beauty and Spa Therapy qualification covers a very wide range of practical skills and knowledge required for working in the beauty and spa therapy industry.

Core topics include:

  • Promote and sell products and services to clients
  • Provide body massage
  • Provide facial electrotherapy treatments
  • Provide body electrotherapy treatments
  • Anatomy & Physiology
  • Provide dry spa treatments

For learners who just fall short of the Level 2 entry requirements we offer Level 1 Beauty Therapy. This qualification is a support role within a commercial beauty type environment and includes a variety of basic beauty skills such as facials, manicure & nail treatments and make-up. This qualification will prepare learners for progression to level 2 Beauty, Make-up and Nails

Work Experience is an essential part of all full time study programmes. Learners will complete a minimum 35 hours within an industry linked environment per academic year/qualification.

Entry requirements

Entry Level Programme: Skills for Life & Work

There are no qualifications required for these courses.

They are designed for students with Special Educational Needs & Disabilities (SEND).

 

Entry Level Programme: Skills & Employability

English & maths GCSE Grades G-U / 1 or English & maths Functional Skills Entry Level 3

 

GCSE Re-sit Study Programme

You will receive an offer of a place on the course subject to passing an English & maths assessment.

 

Vocational Level 1 Programme

English & maths GCSE Grades E-G/1- 2 or English & maths Functional Skills Entry Level 3.

 

Vocational Level 2 Programme

Minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade D/3 including maths and English or a vocational qualification Level 1, plus GCSE grade D/3 in both maths and English. English & maths Functional Skills Level 1 will be accepted as an alternative to GCSEs.

 

Vocational Level 3 Programme

Minimum of 4 GCSEs at grades A-C/4-9 (including maths and English) or a vocational qualification Level 2, plus GCSE grade C/4 in both maths and English

Assessment

All Technical Qualifications are graded (Pass, Merit and Distinction and Distinction*) having external end point assessment. This includes:

  • Written theory paper
  • Synoptic practical examination

Milestone assessment points will track learner progress in preparation for end point assessment and include written tests and assignments, oral questioning, practical skills demonstrations and mock assessment.

For level 3 qualifications the ALL grade levels carry UCAS points to support progression to HE

Financial information

Full Time

If you are aged between 16 and 18 when you start your course and are taking a course leading to a qualification, the tuition and exam fees are free. However, there may be some additional costs for optional trips, recommended text books and professional start up kits. We have a bursary scheme to assist with these costs.

  • If you're aged 19 or over, you may need to pay tuition fees and exam fees, but many students will be eligible for discounts on these.
  • If you're 19 to 23 and do not already hold a full Level 2 (five or more GCSEs at Grade A* to C/1-4; NVQ Level 2 or equivalent) or full Level 3 (an Access to Higher Education Course, BTEC National Certificate or Diploma, NVQ Level 3, or two or more A Levels or equivalent) qualification you will be exempt from paying tuition fee and exam fees if you undertake a full Level 2 or full Level 3 qualifications.    
  • If you are 19 and over, undertaking an Entry Level, Level 1 or Level 2 course you may be exempt from paying tuition and exam fees if you receive an active benefit (e.g. Universal Credit, Employment Support Allowance, Job Seekers Allowance) and are seeking work.
  • If you are aged 19 and over and study GCSE Maths or English and do not already hold a C grade/4 or higher in the subject that you are studying, you will be exempt from paying tuition fee and exam fees.

The Level 2 Technical Certificate in Beauty Therapy is aimed at learners that are looking to start a career in the beauty therapy industry.  Learners could progress into employment, onto an Apprenticeship, or further their studies by taking a Level 3 qualification in Beauty & Spa or Nail Technologies.

The Level 2 Technical Certificate in Beauty Retail is aimed at learners that are looking to start a career in the beauty retail industry.  Learners could progress into employment, onto an Apprenticeship, or further their studies by taking other qualifications.to broaden their skills base such as Level 2 Nail Technologies or Beauty Therapy.

The Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Beauty & Spa Therapy aims to provide you with a range of specialist technical practical skills and knowledge, which will equip you to seek employment or Higher Education (HE) pathways within the Beauty & Spa Therapy Industry.

Employment could be found in the following areas: Nail bar/salon, Beauty salon, Media, Cruise ship/hotel, Spa, Product retail or Manufacturing company.

  • Opportunities for freelance work or self-employment are unlimited for career savvy motivated individuals.
