Public Services Level 3 Extended Diploma at South Essex College

Course description

This is a full time, Advanced Level 3 BTEC qualification in which you study a whole range of subjects that give you an excellent understanding of the Public Services.  The Course is designed to give you a good underpinning knowledge of the public services and develop some essential skills that you will need in the future.  At the end of your course you will have an excellent CV that will include both the Academic qualifications you need, plus a series of career enhancing skills, such as teamwork, communication and problem solving.

In addition to the main qualification you will study functional skills.

You will learn in a variety of ways, from traditional class activities and lessons to practical activities such as working in teams.

We expect all our public services students to wear a uniform when they attend College. The uniform consists of black trousers/skirt (not jeans) with black shoes and a golf shirt and/or fleece with a South Essex College logo. The golf shirt/fleece will be purchased via the College. As an alternative to the black trousers / skirt and black shoes you may choose to opt for smart black combat trousers and plain black trainers.   Apart from pen and paper, you also will need clothing suitable for the fitness and sports units.  Most students will experience a residential visit, so a sleeping bag, suitable walking and bad weather clothing will be expected.

Entry requirements

  • four GCSEs at grade four/grade C or above, including maths and English, or
  • Public Services Level 2 Diploma plus maths at grade four/grade C or above, or equivalent
  • successful attendance at interview event

A key element of your course is the attainment of Functional Skills (currently available in Math, English and IT). You will study a Functional Skill each year.

You will gain a detailed understanding into a range of public services. This does not mean simply the Police, Fire or Ambulance services, but also the Prison Service, HM Customs and Excise, the Armed Forces, community service and emergency service related organisations. You will learn and develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required for success in employment in the public services. You will look at the main issues facing you within the public services in relationship to society. Also how you can develop your fitness, stay healthy and maintain a level of fitness which will enable you to meet the physical entry requirements for some of the public services. The course also requires you to undertake an expedition which can involve a residential to an outward bound centre.

    • September 2014 sees the grand unveiling of a new £45 million Thurrock Campus in Grays which will include restaurants, health facilities, shops and an advice centre. There will also be specialist workshop and studio spaces linked to courses for technology, media and creative arts, and facilities for art, design, logistics, engineering and IT courses.

      There will also be key areas available for public and community use. Hair and beauty salons, a restaurant and coffee shop will also be open to the public and are destined to breathe new life back into Grays.
