Course description

This course will give students an insight into the sport and health industry as a whole while helping them develop a huge range of sport-related skills for a career. Students will learn how the body functions, why exercise and sport is important for a healthy lifestyle, sports nutrition and how attitude and psychology can make a good player.
Students will learn through a mix of practical and theoretical exercises and benefit from trips and visits to professional sporting venues and from industry guest speakers. Some of the areas students will study include sports coaching, sport injuries, fitness testing and training,  exercise for health and lifestyle, psychology for sports performance, and organizing sports events. They will also be able to undertake units in instructing physical activity, fitness training programming, and sports development to develop their ability to deliver fitness instruction.
On completion of this course, students can use their qualification to study sport at degree level or work in the ever growing sport and health industry.
 

Entry requirements

You’ll need to have five GCSEs at a Grade 4 or above including Math and English, as well as a passion for sport and interest in the industry.

Assessment

You’ll be assessed through a range of coursework and assignments throughout the course.

Further information

Once you’ve completed this course you’ll be able to continue onto a sport related degree course or gain employment within the sport, health and fitness industry.

    • Nicholls Campus offers courses for school leavers, adults and university level students. Subject areas include business, care, IT, nursing and medical sciences. The campus is home to the Arden School of Theatre, offering professional training in the performing arts as part of The Manchester College. The campus also hosts courses in skills for life and independent living for students with learning difficulties.

      Nicholls Campus is a specialist centre for sport. It’s home to the Nicholls Community Football Centre of Excellence and the college’s Sports Academies in football, rugby and basketball.

      Ardwick is close to Manchester’s city centre and the city's universities. Nicholls Campus includes an impressive Grade II listed building with its own gardens. There’s a small park within walking distance of the campus and a green space across the road.

      The nearby Manchester Apollo is a 3,500 capacity live music venue. Sportcity and the City of Manchester Stadium are five minutes away by car. There are a post office, supermarket and other shops nearby. The campus is on a main bus route from the city centre and is close to Ardwick train station.
