Course description

Are you considering a career in the construction Industry? If you’d like to learn the essential skills required by the construction industry, and earn a qualification, then this is the course for you. This is for learners interested in working in the construction industry, but do not know which trade area to specialise in, Level 1 qualification in Construction Skills are the perfect opportunity to develop practical skills needed by some employers in the industry, whilst giving you a taster of a variety of trades before choosing to progress into further learning in a specific trade such as bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, plastering, painting and decorating, and plumbing.On this Level 1 Certificate, you’ll cover a range of essential skills and knowledge to prepare you for work in your chosen area of bricklaying, carpentry and joinery, plastering, painting and decorating, plumbing and also a mandatory unit on Introduction to health and safety in constructionAs part of the course, you’ll be able to develop your functional skills in English and maths alongside your construction skills. This will help fully prepare you for a successful career in the Construction sector.

Entry requirements

To enrol on this course, you’ll need to have relevant GCSE qualifications at grades D-G, but we will take into account any previous experience too. You’ll also be asked to take an initial assessment in English and maths, along with an interview, before we offer you a place on this qualification.

Assessment

Throughout this course, you’ll complete a range of practical, hands-on assessments in the workshop to build up your individual portfolio. You’ll also take some exams covering health and safety, and questions relating to your trade area.

      Openshaw is a suburb of east Manchester, a short bus ride from Manchester’s city centre. Openshaw Campus is built at the heart of the community with an open plan design and attractive green space and water features. Sportcity and the City of Manchester Stadium are close to the campus. Sportcity has a number of sports venues and fitness and sports facilities for the public. There is a 14-screen cinema five minutes away by car or 25 minutes on foot.
