AS Core Maths at Wigston College

Course description

Core Maths is the qualification for students who achieved a Grade 4 (formerly Grade C) at GCSE Maths who want to keep up their valuable maths skills but are not planning to take AS or A-level mathematics.

 

At the end of the two-year

course, students will come out with a level 3 qualification – with equivalent UCAS points to an AS level.

 

The qualification is assessed by final examination and is based around developing practical maths skills for the real world, be it in work, study or everyday life.

 

Core Maths builds on GCSE maths with a sharper focus on problem solving skills by considering and tackling mathematics in meaningful contexts. This includes

 

financial applications of mathematics as well as further statistical ideas that can support work in other subjects they will be studying

such as psychology, health sciences, geography, sociology and even history.

Course content

Assessment

AS Core Mathematics is linear and students sit all their exams at the end of the course. (1 academic year) There will be no coursework element to Core Mathematics AS level. Content is assessed over two papers both weighted equally. A course of study leading to this qualification should enable students to: develop mathematical modelling, evaluating and reasoning skills solve problems some of which will not be well defined and may not have a unique solution solve substantial and real life problems encountered by adults use ICT as an exploratory tool for developing mathematical understanding and when solving problems develop skills in the communication, selection, use and interpretation of their mathematics enjoy mathematics and develop confidence in using mathematics

Future opportunities

There has been a tremendous amount of coverage in the Media recently about the UK’s gap in basic maths skills. Only 20% of students study maths beyond GCSE in the UK – the lowest rate in leading developed countries in the world. This puts young people in the UK at a major disadvantage in a global job market. An investigation into the mathematical and statistical requirements in undergraduate disciplines, reported that many students arrive at university with unrealistic expectations of the mathematical and statistical demands of their subjects which leads to a lack of confidence and anxiety by the students. This course has been introduced to address these issues.
