AAT Accounting Certificate Level 2 at Folkestone College

Course description

Thinking about a career in Accounting or Finance? This qualification is an ideal starting point for anyone wanting to get an overview of accounting practices before progressing on to the L3 AAT Diploma or L3 in Enterprise and Business; or for those wanting to upskill themselves for a new role or after a career break. The purpose of the AAT Foundation Certificate in Accounting is to offer grounding in the core accounting knowledge and skills and the qualification takes one academic year to complete.

Course content

The AAT Foundation Certificate in Accounting covers a range of skills and practices in five mandatory units which ensure that students are well prepared to progress into a career in finance, professional accountancy or business. The units are:

  • Bookkeeping Transactions
  • Bookkeeping Controls
  • Elements of Costing
  • Using Accounting Software
  • Working Effectively in Finance

Entry requirements

4 Ds or Grade 3s or above including English and Maths or a relevant full Level 1.


Four of the five units are assessed individually in end-of-unit assessments (exams) and the fifth unit comprises of a synoptic assessment sat at the end of the course. This assessment will examine how you can apply knowledge and skills learnt from all of the units that have been covered during the year. All unit assessments are set and marked by AAT and may be a combination of online as well as paper based assessment.

Future opportunities

The knowledge and kills developed during the course of this qualification will enable learners to progress to higher levels of learning – either in Accounting and Finance or Business and Enterprise, or to seek employment with confidence and/or to progress to the next level of learning.
