BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport at Leicester Riders Basketball and LCFC Community Trust BTEC Education Academy

Course description

The Leicester Riders Foundation and LCFC Community Trust (LRF&LCFCCT) have formed an exciting new education partnership, which will offer BTEC Sports courses to 16-18 year olds.

The programme will combine classroom based education alongside daily Futsal and/or Basketball training. The course is a two year full time course and will include the BTEC programme of study, class and individual tutorials, work experience/employability, NGB coaching badges, math and English resit (if students do not pass these at school) and practical training/competition in basketball and futsal

Qualification: BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport   (Equivalent of 3 A-Levels)

Course content

Units of study: Principals of Anatomy and Physiology The Physiology of Fitness Assessing Risk in Sport Fitness Training and Programming Sports Nutrition Sports Coaching Current Issues in Sport Exercise, Health and Lifestyle Psychology for Sports Performance Sports Injuries Talent ID and Development Analysis of Sports Performance Work Experience in Sport Technical and Tactical Skills in Sport Athlete's Lifestyle

NGB Coaching Badges (paid for)

Access to driving lessons (17+ years)

Practical coaching sessions (delivered by pro basketballers/LRF coaching staff and LCFC coaching staff)

Entry requirements

Entry Requirements: Minimum 4 GCSE’s 4-9 (4 or above in Maths & English Desirable)

The BTEC Level 3 will be assessed using a variety of assessment methods which accomodate all learning styles. These include:

Financial information

All further education courses we offer are fully funded for 16-18 year olds. There may be a small fee for training kit, which bursarys are available for. This information will be provided at our upcoming open days.

Future opportunities

Our aim is to create a long term education/employment pathway for all students from the age of 16 right up into adulthood. We will have opportunities available for students on completion of their BTEC to undertake a sports coaching apprenticeship with us where they will obtain an NVQ Level 3 in Supporting the Delivery of PE and School Sport as well as employment opportunities within both The Leicester Riders Foundation and LCFC Community Trust. Both of whom are heavily involved with coaching in schools, colleges, universities and the local communities in and around Leicester. There will also be opportunities to continue in education with LRF&LCFCCT and complete a BSc Degree in Sport Development and Coaching. As well as the above, students can also gain enough UCAS points to go to University to study a sport related degree, go into general employment/apprenticeship or the Armed Forces.

Further information

Students who enrol onto this course will also benefit from receiving Leicester Riders Game Night experience/work. To work alongside professional basketball players and LCFC futsal coaches. 

LRF&LCFCCT would aim to take students on a residential trip each year. 

Students would also be involved in excursions and end of term trips/awards.

Please note that should you not obtain the required gcse math and English results, you will be given the oppportunity to resit these throughout the course.

    • Overview of the Arena: The Morningside Arena (Leicester Arena), Leiceste Arena is the largest and most flexible indoor space in the city of Leicester, and can be used for conferences, exhibitions, music and comedy events, large-scale dinners, celebrations, product launches, parties, weddings, or any other special event. With over 2,440m2 of floor space in the main Arena, approximately 41m by 62m, and with 220m2 of space on the first floor, the latter capable of subdivision into up to 5 rooms, the Arena has the capability of staging a wide range of events, and provides these exceptional conferencing and teaching and learning facilities right in the centre of Leicester. The Arena has access to superb catering facilities, on-site complimentary car parking, and is adjacent from the inner ring road and in close proximity to a wide range of public transport, with both the Haymarket bus station for the city, and St Margaret’s bus station for the county both in walking distance. The Arena is situated on the Grand Union canal, and with bridge access to Abbey Park, and as well as on site car parking, there is access to up to 5,000 car parking spaces within a half mile radius of the Arena, including off the A6, coming from the north. Events already held include John Bishop comedy night, an evening with Peter Andre, multiple Bollywood music events, and a religious event with the Archbishop of Canterbury. The Arena is also fully accessible for those with disabilities.
