Course description

The NCFE Level 3 Diploma/Extended Diploma in Sport & Physical Activity (Sport & Exercise Science) is suited to students who wish to continue their academic studies in a specialised educational area. The course is aimed at 16-18 year olds who have just completed their GCSEs, or are looking to get back into education to study in this expanding and desirable subject area. The course provides a solid grounding for students wishing to enter the world of Sport and its associated industries, either through progression to university or by entering employment.

Course content

The course consists of 9 units. During the academic year the units will be studied and assessed which will lead to achievement in a Level 3 Diploma in Sport & Physical Activity (Sport & Exercise Science). On completion of the Diploma you will discuss with your tutors whether you wish to continue onto the Extended Diploma or to progress to employment or other courses in the area.

Units include: Exercise Health & Lifestyle, Preparing for a career in sport and physical activity, Principals of Anatomy & Physiology, Fitness Testing for Sport & Exercise, Psychology for Sports Performance, Sports Nutrition, Current Issues in Sport, Sports Injuries, Sport & Exercise Massage.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements?

5 GCSEs grades 4 and above; these must include English and Maths; PE is also desirable or a BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Sport at a Merit grade. Successful applicants must be willing to be involved in all aspects of sport, including practical as well as theoretical.

Assessment

How will I be assessed?

A wide variety of assessments will be used. The NCFE programme will use continuous assessments during the year. You will be able to track your performance as you work towards the pass, merit and distinction grades. Methods of assessment will include: written essays and reports, presentations, practical demonstrations, coaching sessions, posters, leaflets, experiments, interviews and discussions. To facilitate assessment, you will be expected to devote personal time for your studies.

How will I be taught? The programme is a combination of practical training and classroom theory sessions. Each lesson will provide you with assessment opportunities as you work to achieve your goals and targets. You will need an active passion in sport and your tutors will encourage you to discuss your own achievements as well as the issues in modern sport.

What can I do when I finish my course?

The majority of learner’s progress onto the NCFE Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport & Physical Activity (Sport & Exercise Science) course. Due to the diverse nature of the course, students are well suited to continuing their studies with degrees in sports science, sports coaching, PE & sport, sports studies and sports management being amongst the most popular. If you want to progress into employment the following areas in the sports and leisure industry would be suitable; health & fitness, leisure centre management, general sports coaching, sports science along with sports development.
