Course description

Challenging and fast-paced, this programme is designed to give you a specialist range of treatment knowledge and skills in nail technology at an advanced level. The programme is aimed at those with a basic nail qualification who wish to progress to an advanced level. 

Course content

What you will study 

This qualification is based on the national occupational standards for beauty therapy and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a nail technician. Learners must achieve all mandatory units which include:

• Health and safety in the salon
• Client care and consultation
• Nail enhancements using light cured gel
• Nail enhancements using liquid and powder
•  Electric filing for nails
• Promote and sell products and services
• Cosmetic science for nail enhancements
• Design and apply nail art
• Anatomy and physiology for nail services
• Airbrush nail art
• Gel polish for nails

Maths and English are key elements of any full-time programme of study in College. If you do not already have a GCSE at 9-4 in these subjects, you will need to attend sessions allocated on your timetable. These are varied and designed to cater for all ability levels. You will receive advice and guidance regarding the correct level for you.

Skills in Maths and English will support your full-time course, assisting you with assignment writing, research, job applications, presentations, managing your own finances and interpretation of data, to mention just a few. They will also help you in the future. Most employers are looking for ability in these areas and the majority of university courses require you to have Maths and English GCSEs 9-4.  This is why the development of Maths and English is so important, whatever your field of study.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at 9-4 or A*-C, including English and Maths
4 GCSEs at 9-4 or A*-C and Level 2 Functional Skills in either English or Maths, and Grade D or 3 or Level 1 Functional Skills in the other
Level 2 Nail Technology


You will be assessed performing the skills on a range of clients and your achievement will be recorded in your own ‘in house’ assessment records. Oral questioning will take place at the time of the practical assessments. There are written end tests for some units and a number of assignments per unit. Throughout the course you will need to keep records of all the work undertaken to provide evidence of competence. These will form the basis of your portfolio. 

Financial information

Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, and residentials, which are payable by all students.

Any student registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and subsequently withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any re-sit examination will incur a cost.

Different fees apply to international/overseas students and those studying this qualification as a standalone course.

      The Castleford Campus (previously known as the skillsXchange) houses the College’s provision in Construction, Motor Vehicle, Engineering, Hair and Beauty, IT and some Care and replaces the training which was previously offered at the College’s Whitwood Campus.

      Located at Junction 32 of the M62 between Castleford and Pontefract, the site is well known for Xscape, the indoor ski slope whose building houses a 14-screen cinema, bowling alley, climbing wall, sports facilities and restaurants. The Campus is situated directly next to the Asda in Glasshoughton.

      A learning resource centre, equipped with the very latest in technology, is a superb place for individual study, or to relax and use the internet. The Centre overlooks the large external courtyard, where students can mix, mingle and chill.

      In state-of-the-art hair and beauty salons, including a nail bar, we are training the next generation of hairdressers and beauticians. These professional salons offer live training environments to our students, with treatments for both men and women available at affordable prices. There are also industry standard facilities for the study of construction and engineering, motor vehicle and electrical courses.
