At Allerton High we believe we offer a really outstanding Post 16 experience.  Each year we welcome students from our present Year 11, but also many who join us from other schools.

Our aim is to give students the aspiration, knowledge, opportunities and qualifications needed to secure a next step that inspires them.

We are a close knit welcoming community, in which students feel valued, supported and challenged.  Strong student voice means that we shape our provision in response to the feedback from a range of stakeholders, including our students and their parent/carers to ensure that we are constantly improving and adapting to the ever changing demands of the wider economy.

OFSTED visited in September 2013 and judged the Sixth Form provision to be "good" and "improving rapidly".  Our 2018 results highlighted this rapid improvement with 46% of results at A*-B and 73% at C or better.  A third of our students who applied to University went on to Russell Group institutions, with others securing places on School Leavers' Programmes with companies such as KPMG, as well as securing opportunities in the Netherlands and America.

About us

We were re-designated in 2007 as a Specialist School for Business and Enterprise. This has enabled us to offer even more opportunities for students to develop their understanding and skills in Mathematics, ICT and Business and Enterprise. We have forged strong links with five Primary Schools and a High School offering Business, Mathematics and ICT teaching and support. Pupils from the Primary Schools visit our school on a weekly basis to complete an ICT course. Teachers from Allerton provide timetabled sessions at Primary Schools in Mathematics and English.

The Post 16 programme at Allerton High includes a range of intiaitives designed to enhance and enrich the experience of our students.  This year Year 12 students will take part in Business and Employment programmes such as Building My Skills with Esh Construction, as well as local and national enterprise challenges such as Leeds Enterprise Advisory Programme (LEAP).  We have also seen student led initiatives such as the Allerton High Medical Society and the Competitive Courses group.  Our successful Debating team made the prestigious National Finals at Debating Matters in London in 2017 and we are hoping to be successful in 2019.  2019 will seen another expedition (to Nicaragua and Costa Rica) and there will be a production of the musical "Hairspray" in July 2019. These are just very edited highlights of the opportunities available.

We are proud of our partnership work with companies like Unifrog, as well as the Basketball Academy and LLS.  The Basketball Academy has been very successful since it began in 2013.  Not only have we made the U18 National Finals twice but it has also seen our students secure some fantastic opportunities in the USA and the UK.  Our partnership with LLS has meant that we are able to offer a very high quality coaching programme at Level 3 to our students.  The course also involves amazing opportunities overseas in countries as diverse as America, Sri Lanka, Thailand, China and Norway.

Facilities available

Allerton High Business & Enterprise Specialist School moved into a brand new, state-of-the-art learning environment in September 2008. The new building is designed around a central “street” and five curriculum “pods”, where students are able to access specialist teaching and learning experiences. The five “pods”  comprise: Science & Technology; English & Modern Foreign Languages; Maths, Business & ICT; Sport, Art, Music & Drama; History, Geography, RE & PSHE.

There are many social spaces designed into the structure, with a large central street, “break out” spaces and external learning areas, such as curriculum gardens, a Science terrace and an amphitheatre.

The building offers to students:

  • Two purpose-built drama studios with lighting rigs
  • Sports hall with climbing wall and viewing gallery
  • Fitness Suite and Activity Studio
  • Post -16 Social area with outdoor first floor terrace
  • Post -16 Study area with dedicated pc’s for 50 students
  • 7 High specification dedicated ICT and Business learning areas
  • 7 fully-fitted Science Laboratories and 3 Science Classrooms
  • Fully equipped Resistant Materials room
  • Graphics, Textiles and Food Technology specialist learning areas
  • Light, open and accessible “break out” spaces for independent and small group learning
  • All-day Dining in a fully fitted cafeteria
  • Large Multi-Faith Hall with two classrooms
  • Flexible walls to allow swift changes to room layouts

Allerton High Business & Enterprise Specialist School is also designed to allow “anytime, anywhere access” for our wireless-enabled equipment. Students will be able to access ICT-enriched experiences throughout their learning day with us, in a variety of formats.

Our Post-16 students are particularly well catered for with a purpose-built silent study area equipped with computers and a social space with kitchen and comfortable seating, as well as an external terrace.

There are fantastic sporting facilities for students; an external amphitheatre; a large Learning Resource area to promote independent learning; two fully equipped Drama studios; many different “Break-out” spaces across all of the learning pods and we have a unique Multi-Faith Centre, which has been designed to accommodate followers of five main faiths.

Additional support

We recognise that to succeed in our ambition to be an excellent school, students will need a high level of support at home, at school and in their community. Creating a partnership with parents/carers depends on having regular and positive contact, building trust and confidence and a genuine commitment to involve parents/carers in supporting their child’s learning.

From 2015 we re-organised our Post 16 Coaching so that a specialist team of coaches work with combined groups of Year 12 and 13 students.  This is designed to ensure that the students are given the best support possible on their journey through Post 16.

Emphasis is placed on educating the student as a whole individual. All staff are given support to develop their joint role as carers and teachers of the students in their charge.

We offer more than 30 Advanced Level courses, students initially accept places on AS courses, with progression to A2 dependent upon performance; allocations on A2 courses are informed by our monitoring system in Year 12.

Through our Citizenship programme, which includes Enrichment Days and Enterprise activities, students have opportunities to develop:

  • Effective study management
  • Teamwork 

All students will participate in a dynamic programme including an Ethics and Health Day and careers preparation; they also have the opportunity to follow additional accredited courses.

Our staff are subject specialists, highly experienced in teaching Post-16 students. Students will encounter a more independent style of teaching and learning, and our staff will help them to make the successful transition from lower school. Every student is a member of a Coaching group, which meets twice a week. Each half term, students meet with Coaches to discuss progress. For parents/carers, there are Consultation and Information Evenings; however, they can make an appointment to talk to staff at any time.
 

Entry Criteria and Options Process

Entry to AS is considered with a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 9-4 or equivalent or above including English and Maths, though some courses have higher requirements. 

We will provide students with appropriate information to choose the right courses to meet their needs and aspirations.  We hold an Open Evening and provide initial guidance meetings. 

The Sixth Form comprises students who have already spent five years at Allerton High and those who join from other schools.  Everyone makes a valuable contribution, and we welcome the arrival of new faces that bring fresh talent and enthusiasm.

We are proud of our reputation for excellence - examination results are consistently high with students gaining places at the University of their choice or securing employment.  This outstanding record is just one reason why we are a popular choice.
