Welcome to Boston Spa School
Boston Spa Sixth form is a large highly successful centre which offers post 16 students access to a very wide range of courses, with excellent progression to university and employment.
At A level we have sustained our 98% pass rate, with a significantly positive Value Added with the majority of grades A*-C. In the toughest year for a generation, these great results have seen 95% of Boston Spa’s UCAS applicants secure their places at University
Our mission is to develop young people who think for themselves but act for others. We look to create opportunity, direction and purpose where young people leave us with a love of learning and the skill to progress that learning throughout their adult life.
As a large Sixth form of over 250 students we have the flexibility to offer combinations of subjects to suit the needs of our students. From Maths to Media, Chemistry to Psychology, we’ve got top class teaching and facilities for more than 25 Level 3 courses including traditional A and AS levels and a full range of BTEC qualifications. We also offer a general Level 2 qualification suited to the interests of the individual student which can be coupled with GCSE Maths and English resits.
We have a wide range of sports related courses backed by impressive sports facilities including a dance studio and fitness suite. We are a centre for the Leeds United Football Development course.
Our enrichment programmes can help you gain useful skills and develop your interest in particular careers or organisations and ensure you have fun doing so.
Our combination of great teaching and personal support led Ofsted to comment 'Students’ progress accelerates through their courses because teaching is consistently good; they enjoy lessons and find them interesting'.
The Sixth Form is justifiably proud of its academic success and particularly its high Average Points per Entry score. It is clear that student success is dependent on high quality teaching, and equally high quality and motivated learning. The Sixth Form is committed to a process of continual improvement and constantly reviews and refines its processes to support student achievement. Success in the Sixth Form is based around a partnership between you the student, your subject teachers, home and your personal Achievement Leader.
The April 2015 Ofsted report rated the Sixth Form as Good.
Through the tutorial programme students will have the opportunity to explore the wide range of higher education and employment opportunities open to them. This will include collective and individual visits to universities, visiting speakers and focused parents’ information evenings. Students will work with their tutor to refine their course selection, set realistic targets and build a strong UCAS application.
In addition there is dedicated and specialist support for those students applying for academically demanding courses including medicine, dentistry, veterinary science and all applications to Oxford and Cambridge. Support and guidance for these students begins early in Year 12 to ensure they have the best possible chances of succeeding in their applications to such competitive and demanding courses.
Our curriculum offers a wide range of subjects at A-Level and BTEC (Level 3). The aim is to cater for every student from those wishing to follow traditional academic subjects to those more suited to vocational subjects. The curriculum offer is reviewed annually following consultation with our students in Year 10 in order to ensure it is relevant and meets the needs of our next cohort, allowing progression from the KS4 curriculum as well as introducing a number of new subjects.
A-Levels are assessed by exams, with coursework and assessed practicals in some subjects. BTECs are assessed throughout the year by assignments set by the teachers.
From Maths to Media, Physics to Performing Arts, we've got top-class teaching facilities for more than 25 courses, allowing you to pursue your interests and work towards achieving your dreams - whatever they may be.
Our sports facilities are used by Leeds United for their football academy. And that's before you get to our fitness suite, dance studio and media centre with Macs.
Our out-of-town setting means we're not competing for space with hundreds of other establishments. We've been able to develop our way of doing things just as we want to. You'll have the space and time to work out how you like to do things as well.
Whatever you choose to study, we want to make sure that you're equipped to use your skills in the real world. Our dedicated professional careers support can help you explore your options, while our vocational courses are as much about achieving the right mindset as gaining the necessary skills for your chosen profession.
We have a dark room, digital photography studio with studio lighting and green screen, and dedicated sixth form art studio which is unique to our school.
On entering the Sixth Form each student is allocated to a tutor group with a specialist Achievement Leader. The Sixth Form staff are a very experienced team who focus directly on student learning and achievement. They have had extensive training and are given additional free time during the week to follow up individual student needs. Supporting the Achievement Leaders are the Head of Sixth Form, Assistant Head of Sixth Form, Sixth Form Administrator and the Student Services team.
To help achieve the best possible results, all students are allocated Minimum Target Grades based on their GCSE performance. Students are then regularly monitored against these targets to ensure they are making good progress. Throughout the year teachers record written reports on progress and offer guidance on how to improve on current performance. Students meet their Achievement Leaders every half-term for a one-to-one discussion on their progress. There is a Parents’ Evenings in January, and regualr contact home.
Each week students will have a timetabled tutorial lesson focused on induction, improving academic performance, the university and employment application process and some Personal, Social & Health Education. The Sixth Form staff are the students’ advocates, performance coaches and also write any references which may be called for.
The focus of the Sixth Form tutorial programme very much reflects the belief that each student is an individual, an exception and a person to be valued. Consequently it is very flexible and responsive to the individual needs of students.
