Welcome to Brigshaw High School and Language College
Welcome to Brigshaw High School and Language College. We are proud to offer courses to suit all kinds of students.
There are so many different subject combinations thanks, in part, to a partnership arrangement that we operate with Temple Moor High School and Royds. The partnership enables us to put on courses that would only attract small numbers of students if they were offered by each individual centre. By drawing together these small numbers, we can create larger groups and therefore satisfy more students. These courses may include some adult learners and may take place in twilight hours, between 3pm and 5pm.
A former student's view of her time at Brigshaw:
Brigshaw Sixth Form is more than just a stepping stone. The teachers help you to find something that not only are you good at, but something that you really enjoy whatever it might be. In the Sixth Form I studied Media, English Literature, English Language, History and General Studies. Media was my favourite. Everyone in the class got on really well and we all worked together to make sure we were getting the best out of each other and we loved being there. It was this positive experience that led me to study Film and Television Production at York St John University.
The support and experiences you get from the Sixth Form help you grow as a person. I'm always glad I went to Brigshaw Sixth Form and not to another college because, not only did I have a good group of friends there, but the teachers already know you
and they know what's best for you. You build a great relationship with the teachers, and many of them I'm still in touch with today. Sixth Form also makes you a much more independent person; I know I definitely grew up a little bit and became more confident.
It is more than another 2 years at school, it's exciting, there's always something interesting going on and you're learning at the same time. I have some fantastic memories from the Sixth Form. We went to Paris on a Media trip and to see plays with the English Literature class. Being at Brigshaw Sixth Form helped me become the person I am today and I suggest it to anyone who's ready to take the next step, but why not do it with the support of teachers you already know and your friends around you?
At Brigshaw, we truly believe in your whole education; we want you to get the best exam results possible, but we also want you to develop skills that will be useful throughout your entire life. You start as an adolescent but we hope that you will leave as an adult, personally and intellectually equipped to deal with the challenges of the 21st century.
Following a major rebuild, we have some of the most exciting classroom spaces in the country! There are fantastic facilities including ICT suites, a media editing room, fitness equipment, a climbing wall, drama studio and a 200 seater hall. Post-16 students have exclusive use of an independent study area supported by personal computers and, when you are not working, there is a newly refurbished Post-16 Common Room in which you can relax and unwind.
The Head of Sixth alongside the Pastoral Lead and their team of tutors, build relationships with students that enable them to celebrate successes and highlight problems before they impact too seriously on progress. They will ensure that all students are carefully monitored as they progress on their courses and regular Reviews are held at which a student’s progress is evaluated and targets are set. This personal support, and that of careers staff, is critical, particularly when students come to apply for university or for jobs. They are helped with their applications and the Post 16 team will write references for each student to ensure that they have the best possible chance of progressing and fulfilling their ambitions.
We recognise that teaching and learning is the most important thing that happens at Brigshaw and we are rightly proud of our staff and students. The majority of our students who apply to university gain their first choice place. 33% of applicants obtain places at Russell Group universties and we are delighted in the last year to have had students go on to Cambridge, Durham and the London School of Economics
