Welcome to Bishop Young Church of England Academy
Bishop Young Academy is a, caring and happy community Aided Academy in the North East of the city of Leeds. Our students aged 11-19 come from all over Leeds to receive an education in which we all work together to stretch them academically, support them pastorally and help them develop socially and spiritually, as expressed in our mission statement.
`In partnership, to educate, nurture, empower`
We educate the young people entrusted to our care by giving them a high standard of teaching and setting them appropriate academic challenges throughout their time with us. We expect all students, whatever their ability, to work hard to achieve their full potential. We expect them to conform to our firm but fair framework of positive discipline, in which we encourage them to take responsibility for themselves; but we deal firmly with those who do not behave appropriately.
We nurture our students by providing them with a safe, caring and loving environment in which to develop in self-confidence and self-understanding within the Christian family of the school community.
The school`s staff do this in partnership with parents, our governors, local churches, the local authority and - most important of all - with our students. We know that we need to work together with respect, understanding and trust within the framework of our Christian beliefs and values.
Your future is bright at BYA
It doesn't matter if you are a night owl or an early bird; our students have access to our state of the art facilities for more hours in the day. So even if it is dark outside, we will still lead you towards a brighter future.
You will be encouraged to manage your time effectively, and develop your organisational skills. You will have access to a purpose built Post 16 Study area, Information Centre, excellent and extensive resources and ICT facilities including a wireless ICTnetwork.
Student leadership-The main aim of the student leadership team is to promote social diversity among the 6th formers and promote post-16 experience in the academy.
The team has a strong student voice and they channel this through undertaking various projects and initiatives. The team also organise external trips such as bowling, laser quest and others as part of social events in the 6th form.
Student prefects- The student prefects are selected to represent 6th form in the academy. Some of the task involves assisting staff during open days, lunch time duties, assemblies and others.
You need to be well prepared for the transition to learning in Higher Education, employment and life in the wider world. Emphasis therefore is placed upon both independent and inter-dependent learning and developing your personal skills and qualities.
Our pastoral system is designed to give you friendly support and professional guidance throughout your time here. You get to know your personal tutor in the first few days and become a member of a tutor group which meets regularly. Here you will make new friends and explore all kinds of topics such as personal career ambitions, health matters, study skills and current world issues.
The academy will support you as you become an independent learner and role model, inspiring our younger students and working alongside our staff.
The BYA Sixth Form experience has enriched our students and enabled them to access a variety of further education and employment opportunities. Former students are now studying a variety of degree courses in universities across the UK.
