Choosing your pathway

We are pleased to be able to offer a broad curriculum at Post-16, helping students with different ambitions and goals to succeed. We have divided the curriculum into different pathways to help students and parents understand the various options available. Level 3 academic pathway (2 years): Students on this pathway will study 3 Advanced Levels (A-Levels) over two years. A-Levels are very challenging qualifi cations and though many have some coursework, the majority of each qualifi cation is measured through external examinations. Entry requirements: 9-4 grades in 5 or more GCSEs or equivalent, including meeting the entry requirements of each course. Level 3 vocational pathway (2 years): Students on this pathway will study largely vocational subjects like BTEC Sport, BTEC Health and Social Care or BTEC Information Technology. These are new reformed qualifi cations and most subjects now include challenging exams as well as the more traditional coursework. Some vocational courses are the equivalent of 1 A-Level in terms of the points they are worth (e.g. Extended Certifi cates). Others are equivalent to two A-Levels (e.g. Extended Diplomas). We offer the following vocational qualifi cations: • BTEC Extended Certifi cates (one A-Level equivalent) • BTEC Extended Diplomas (two A-Level equivalents) • VTCTs (one A-Level equivalent) • OCR Cambridge Technicals (one A-Level equivalent) Entry requirements: 9 - 4 grades in 5 or more GCSEs or equivalent, including meeting the entry requirements of each course. Level 2 pathway (1 year): The level two pathway is one year in duration and exists to support students who need to focus on English and Maths GCSE. Students will also study Level 2 BTECs in Health and Social Care, PE or Public Services. At the end of the one-year programme, students may begin a two-year Level 3 programme with us, or move on to an alternative post-16 provider. Combining vocational and academic subjects: It is completely appropriate for students to study a mix of academic and vocational subjects (e.g. taking a combination of A-Levels and BTECS based on their interests and goals). Resitting English and Maths: Any student who has not achieved a grade 4 in GCSE English Language or Maths will be given additional lessons and the opportunity to re-sit these examinations in November and June. Students will be considered on a case by case basis if they do not meet the entry requirements of a chosen course.

Clubs and Societies  - On top of providing an outstanding education through our Post-16 qualifications, we also recognise the importance of providing educational opportunities beyond the classroom. Our brilliant Sixth Form teachers offer a range of after school clubs and societies that are becoming increasingly popular with our students. In 2017 we are running the Debating Society, the Student Newspaper, the Basketball Team and by 2018 this offer will expand to suit further interests of our young people.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme In 2017 - we have re-launched the highly prestigious Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme for our sixth formers who are looking to develop their leadership and teamwork skills through volunteering and outdoor pursuits. Students on this scheme will be provided with specialist expedition equipment and full support to ensure they are successful in achieving this award.

Learner success

Some facts and stats worth sharing • In 2017, ALPs* rated our overall A-Level performance as "Very Good." • Almost half of all A-Level subjects received an ALPs rating of "Excellent" or higher. • Ten Year 13s went onto study courses at prestigious Russell Group Universities. • 100% of our university applicants were successful in securing a place at their chosen university. • 75% of all A-Level students hit their challenging target grades. • BTEC Sport and BTEC Performing Arts received an APLS rating of "Excellent". *The Advanced Level Performance System (ALPs) is a national data comparison service allowing providers to compare the performance of their students and qualifications.

Leadership development - We take student leadership extremely seriously at our Sixth Form, recognising the talents of our students by allowing them to shape and infl uence the organisation of which they are part; doing so helps develop essential leadership skills and improves the education of all students in the Academy. We have an elected Sixth Form Leadership Committee which meets weekly to discuss and shape the student experience. We also encourage all students to participate in the Personal Development Programme, in which they spend one hour a week teaching, coaching or supporting our lower school students.

    • Our fabulous new academy building opened in September 2011. At a cost of £30m it is the flagship school building in Leeds and a fantastic resource for not only LWA but the local community. Boasting innovative features throughout all subject areas, the building is an endorsement of our commitment to excellence for all our students.

Ofsted judged us to be a ''good school with outstanding leadership and management''.

At LWA we hold very simple values: that learning is our focus and our core business; that relationships should always be positive and based on mutual respect; and that standards in teaching, learning and behaviour should always be high. This means we have high expectations of everyone within our community.

We have a first-class building and amazing facilities as well as great opportunities to offer our young people. It is packed full of innovative and engaging activities designed to promote active learning. Wherever possible we want our students to learn in the most relevant environment which is why trips are so important to us.

We have extensive partnerships both within Leeds through the universities and colleges locally and beyond in our links with Russell Group universities.
