Welcome to John Smeaton Academy

We welcome you to John Smeaton Academy Sixth Form. We are a well-established Post 16 provider currently embarking on a new journey as we expand our number of A Level courses. We have made this significant change to meet the needs of our students, our local community and the wider national and international economy. Our A level and vocational courses are designed to drive students forward to achieve success in all academic areas. 100% of the students that applied to university were accepted this year and have already embarked on the newest phase of their academic careers.
Our students learn in a state of the art environment and we offer a warm and caring atmosphere in which our students feel happy and safe. We encourage students to raise their aspirations to achieve their best.
We are part of the united learning family, the largest single sponsor of academies in the UK, whose shared aim is to bring out ‘the best in everyone’.
Sixth Form teaching aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills to become independent learners, to aspire to go to university or into the working world and to embark upon a journey of lifelong learning.
To this end, we keep class sizes small and take pride in the additional support which we give to students.
Learning is underpinned by excellent relationships between staff and students. We also value our parents input, not only into their children but to work with us to maintain standards for our young people. We have a dedicated post 16 team who are available at all times to work closely with students on a daily basis to maintain standards of teaching and learning.

Learner success

Academically, in both Key Stage 4 and Sixth Form, student achievements continue to be impressive. The value added statistic rose again in 2011 and 83% of students gained at least 5 A* - C GCSE passes. In the Sixth Form in 2011 there were significant increases in the Average Points Score per student building on already significant increases in previous years. Whether it be the success of our Post 16 students in reaching their University of choice, a Year 10 student being accepted after interview for a Young Apprenticeship in Construction or a student with Complex Learning Difficulties sailing a dingy across Otley Tarn, we celebrate all successes equally. In the sporting arena, John Smeaton students have a City wide reputation for football, rugby and increasingly, cricket, reaching the latter stages of most competitions and picking up silverware in the process.  Several of our students are currently with professional football clubs in the academy ranks.
