Welcome to Roundhay School - All through Education from 4 to 18

I am delighted to welcome you to Roundhay School. You will find our Sixth Form to be a vibrant, friendly and diverse community. We are ambitious for each individual and have the highest expectations of all our students, in every aspect of school life.

During your time with us we will help to bridge the gap between school and the world beyond, developing the independence and resilience to give students the confidence to be the best they can be.

Our students are inspired to have a love of learning and are stretched and challenged within a very supportive environment. We offer an outstanding team of teachers, tutors and academic mentors, in addition to your Progress Leaders to support you at every step of your journey with us.

The overwhelming majority of our students successfully progress to university. For those looking to other options, we offer a range of opportunities to explore pathways such as apprenticeships. Beyond academic studies we promote a broad and rounded experience with an extensive programme of enrichment, extra-curricular activities and work experience. Through this we hope that you will flourish as an individual and gain employability skills that will benefit you in the future.

Thank you for considering Roundhay Sixth Form. We are certain that whatever courses you choose you will thoroughly enjoy your time here.

About us

Our Sixth Form is one of the largest and most diverse in Leeds and has an outstanding record of academic success. The vast majority of our own Year 11 students choose to stay with us and each year more than hundred students from other schools come to join us. Our popularity is based on our proven track record of high student achievement and outstanding teaching and learning, which have given us a reputation we are extremely proud of.

Our examination record is always one of the best in the city and it is no surprise that the overwhelming majority of our sixth-form students go on to continue their education at university. Our last OFSTED inspection concluded: ‘The sixth form at Roundhay is outstanding. The quality of teaching is high and students make very good progress. Facilities are high quality and enrichment opportunities are excellent.”

Our general entry requirements are:

Students must achieve a minimum of 5 subjects at GCSE grades 4 or above (including English Language and Maths) PLUS the subject specific entry requirements

Facilities available

The Pavilion, which opened in September 2017 includes new state of the art classrooms, computing facilities, a multi-use Drama studio and lecture theatre. The centrepiece is an innovative Sixth Form Study Zone with silent study and breakout social space, Wi-Fi access and hubs for group work. The new extension to our dining centre also acts as a Social Learning Space for our sixth formers: here students can work in a café style setting with Wi-Fi access for mobile devices and access to hot and cold drinks

Additional support

We have an experienced team of staff to support you in becoming a successful independent sixth form student and in making the transition to university or employment.  Our success is built on strong pastoral care that facilitates both personal and academic achievement.  Your progress will be monitored regularly ensuring that students and parents know how well you are doing and how you can progress further.  Academic mentors, working under the direction of your Progress Leaders, will support day to day learning opportunities outside of formal lessons.

We are experienced in providing advice and guidance with applications to higher education and enjoy a good record of success to competitive courses, Oxford, Cambridge and other Russell Group institutions.  We have a specialist Sixth Form UCAS Manager, Mr Halliwell, who will lead and guide you through the application process.

For those seeking alternatives to university, we additionally provide opportunities to explore apprenticeships and employability.

Our Year 12 Internship is a week-long work experience placement, arranged by you, in the industry of your choice. Our internship scheme gives you the opportunity to gain experience in your chosen field, enhance university and employment applications and get a real insight into the world of work.

Learner success

In 2018 the progress of our students was above the national average and matched the top 25% of providers nationally.  Our average A level grade for Y13 students was B- and our average grade for our BTEC courses was Distinction*.

Over 80% of our students progressed to university, including over a third of students to Russell Group institutions, including Oxbridge and Medicine/Dentistry.
