Welcome to Swallow Hill Community College

SHCC opened in September 2009 in a superb new flagship building, following the merger of West Leeds and Wortley High schools. The college provides a fantastic 21st century educational opportunity for its students and the local community. We have a vibrant and forward looking Post 16 provision which offers not only good quality teaching but also excellent pastoral care for all its students.

SHCC has joint Technology and Creative Arts specialisms and offers all its students the chance to develop creativity as a key skill for the workplace and as an aspect of their own personal development. We believe in ‘excellence through creativity’

We are an inclusive school offering personalised learning pathways across a range of Level 2 and 3 courses, as well as at Foundation Level. We are committed to working in partnership with local providers to meet the Education Leeds learner entitlement. Students are encouraged to take part in a wide range of extra-curricular activities on offer that will help to prepare them for moving on to their next step, whether that be an apprenticeship, a Further Education course or university.

SHCC is able to offer students individual care and support within the college community whilst providing opportunities for students to experience independent approaches to learning. Post 16 students have their own superb facilities including a study area, common room and all day diner.

About us

Swallow Hill Community College sets not only high standards in academic subjects but has an excellent pastoral system. Students are supported by experienced staff that help the students to fulfil their potential and guide them on to the appropriate career pathways. Swallow Hill Community College has two specialisms, in Technology and the Creative Arts. These vibrant and dynamic faculties allow all students to access a wide range of exciting opportunities both in school and as extra curricular activities. Students are actively encouraged to take a lead in the life of the school and a wide range of activities in areas such as; mentoring younger students, sports leadership and the Post 16 social commitee, which all help students to mature and prepare them for their next step.

Facilities available

Swallow Hill Community College is a newly opened (2009) state of the art college. Post 16 students have their own exclusive, well appointed common room and study area. They also have an all day diner as well as access to the latest gym and ICT facilities.

Additional support

Students have their own personal tutor who monitors their progress throughout their time in Post 16. Students will have regular learning conversations with their tutor and they will be set targets during these sessions that will be reviewed and updated.  There are a number of target setting days throughout the year and a wide range of speakers from Universities and outside agencies come into college to support students' learning.

Post 16 students are encouraged to take an active role in the life of the college. There is a Post 16 committee that organises social functions and supports in college activities. They have already organised fundraising for the Pakistan appeal, set up a student voice forum and are busy organising a Christmas function. There are sports teams that students can join and there is access to the gym and ICT facilities.
