Welcome to Wetherby High School
In 2016 we had more students return to join our Sixth Form from our Year 11 cohort than ever before. That is why there is no better time to join an up and coming, vibrant Sixth Form at Wetherby High School, where everyone is treated as an individual in a school which strives to meet the academic and social needs of all its students.
Relationships with staff will be on a more mature level as students begin to take more responsibility for their learning and acquire new privileges and freedom. At Wetherby High School we are proud of our Sixth Form and believe that all Sixth Form students set the tone for the rest of the school. A caring and dedicated team of Sixth Form tutors and teachers work hard to support all students to develop into caring, confident young adults ready and able to cope with responsibilithy and life beyond school.
The school is unique in having the University of York, one of the country's top universities as a partner in the Education Trust for Wetherby, along with The British Library whose facility is close by, both of which offer us enormous support resouces and critically research facilities.
Our results at AS and A2 continue to improve, making Wetherby High School's Sixth Form one of the highest achieving in the area. Traditionally, the majority of our students go on to university where they study for a diverse range of degrees. The few who choose to go into the world of work, find success in a variety of careers, including the police, accountancy, financial services and ICT.
Our ever expanding 'Enrichment Programme' will enable every one of you to continue your personal development, become good citizens and encourage you to conribute to the immediate and wider community . Current Sixth Form students are working in local primary schools, coaching sports' teams, arranging charity events, working towards the Duke of Edinburgh Awards, Community Sports Leader Award, running the Wetherby Challenge, producing the Student News Letter, training to be Maths and Reading Leaders, the list is endless.
The next two years will be crucial to your future; we at Wetherby believe that our Sixth Form is a centre where you will flourish, achieve and be the best you can. Join us now and benefit from a rounded and successful team of staff and senior students.
We look forward to working with you.
There are many reasons why you should choose Wetherby High School's Sixth Form, not least because of the way it recognises each student as an individual and that each and every one of our students has different needs, talents and interests. We pride ourselves on preparing our students to be creative, confident, caring global citizens who are willing and able to make a difference whether it be to their immediate school community or the wider local, national and international community. We fully recognise the importance of reaching one's academic potential but consider it important for our students to develop fully as individuals.
The majority of our Sixth Form students progress to their first choice university, including Oxford and Cambridge, because they are fully rounded, hardworking, confident, committed independent learners who leave the school ready to deal with whatever they come up against.
The main Sixth Form facility is located above the Senior Science Labs. Students enjoy the benefit of a main study area, study rooms, teaching rooms and computer suite. We do, however, encourage our Sixth Form students to be visible around school and act as role models to younger pupils.
Sixth Form students have their own common room, but also have daily access to the school Library, the Flexible Learning Environment and the Sports Hall.
The school dining hall offers a wide range of food which can be bought and consumed in the common room. There is a kiosk facility available throughout the school day and the sixth form have exclusive access to the dining hall to snack and chill outside of lesson or study periods.
Wetherby High School has established an increasingly diverse range of Enrichment Activities which we expect students to become involved with as we believe education extends far beyond the classroom.
The Sixth Form students elect a Head Girl and Head Boy in Year 13 plus four Deputies with the remaining Year 13 students acting as Student Ambassadors. Year 12 students elect a Head Girl and Boy Senior Prefects with four Deputies with the remainning students classed as Senior Prefects. In this way we expect all our sixth form to take on an ambassadorial role for the school. These students, along with others, lead our school house groups group establishing positive relationships with lower school pupils and acting as role models.
Importantly, the Student Ambassadors and Senior Prefects represent the student voice and liaise closely with the Headteacher, the Student Director, Sixth Form staff and fellow students, providing important feedback and having the opportunity to influence possible changes to school policies.
