About us

30 years of Kent’s top independent sixth form college

Rochester Independent College offers a distinctive alternative to a conventional sixth form and a stepping stone between school and university. Very small classes lead to a far more active involvement by students in their education and almost inevitably to excellent results. We are co educational, academically non selective and welcome day and boarding students.

Facilities available

a sixth form with exceptionally small classes that are more like university tutorials

Students work around tables in lively, stimulating and productive groups. The average class size is 8. Teaching is focussed on the demands of the examinations with regular testing and exam practice.

an academic sixth form with a flexible and engaging choice of A level subjects and a focus on exam success and university entry

RIC is a stepping stone between school and university. Our students are free to choose the A levels that suit them rather than ticking subjects in option blocks. University entrance is increasingly competitive and we liaise with admissions tutors closely, ensuring students choose the right combination of A levels and develop the strongest possible profiles.

an unstuffy, lively sixth form with a talented and inspiring team of highly qualified teachers

There is no uniform, no petty rules, no assembly and students and teachers are on first name terms. Ofsted say: “The quality of teaching and assessment is outstanding. Working relationships are very good and teachers and students enjoy each other’s company. Teachers and students work within an atmosphere of mutual understanding, respect and consideration.”

a  happy, co educational sixth form that is about so much more than examination results.

Students at RIC benefit from what Ofsted describes as, “outstanding spiritual, moral and cultural development.” They enjoy a colourful range of sports and clubs. They are served great school meals and help plan their own exciting events, parties and innovative trips. Sixth form students take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, World Challenge and follow CMI Management courses. At RIC though all non academic activities in the sixth form are optional and students are free to make their own choices about what to take part in.

Additional support

a sixth form where each student has a dedicated personal tutor, providing one to one support and guidance

Ofsted report: “The tutor system makes a significant contribution to students’ educational guidance and underpins their rapid progress.” Personal tutors know their tutees well, meet with them individually and keep parents closely in touch with their progress throughout the academic year.  Advice and guidance at every stage through from subject choice to university application are just as important as good exam results in helping our students realise their potential.

a sixth form where half the students are new to the College each year and students join at different points for courses of different lengths.

RIC is one of the largest sixth forms in Kent and so it is easy to join and make new and interesting friends.

a sixth form with a modern, flexible approach to boarding

Residential students at RIC are from all around the world but we also welcome weekly boarders from elsewhere in Kent and the UK. Our boarding is 16+ only so the atmosphere is more like a university halls of residence than a school. We don’t impose supervised prep and our study bedrooms all have telephones and internet connection.

Learner success

The best grades at A level in core academic subjects remain an excellent passport to higher education. As a result, RIC’s university destinations list is dominated each year by entries to the older and more prestigious Russell Group universities. RIC has one of the largest private school sixth forms in Kent and our expertise in advising students and guiding them through their applications is unmatched. Frequent meetings with their Personal Tutor ensure that students are keeping constant track of their own progress. 38 A level subjects are offered with no subject combination restrictions. The College was founded on excellence in Maths and Science and this success continues with students gaining places at medical, vet and dental schools.
