Welcome to Guilsborough School

Introduction from the Head Teacher

I am very pleased to have the opportunity to write to prospective parents and students. This website is intended to help you with the important decision of choosing the right post-16 course of study for each student. More information will be available at our sixth form entry evening and individual staff are happy to discuss subject courses in more detail with interested students.

Guilsborough was judged to be ‘outstanding’ with an outstanding sixth-form when it was recently inspected in January 2011. We are passionately committed to the achievement of every individual student and to providing high standards of teaching and learning. Our reputation with the local and wider community rests on consistently providing quality education for students of all abilities. Our students’ excellent academic achievements can be seen in the national league tables. We are proud of the examination results we achieve, which demonstrate that we are one of the highest achieving schools in the county. This year 90% of our GCSE students achieved five A*-C grades, with 70% achieving these grades including English and Mathematics.

At A level 70% of our students achieved A-C grades in 2011 with 44% achieving A*/A/B grades; there was a 99% pass rate and 22.5% of students achieved A/A*. We have sustained improvement in exam results with an upwards trend over recent years and excellent ‘value added’ outcomes for students of all abilities who make outstanding progress – this places us in the top 10% of schools nationally. We are also proud of the percentage of students at our school who achieve places at Oxford or Cambridge University – this puts us in the top 10% of state schools; we encourage all our students to aim high and support them in every way we can. We are fortunate to have excellent facilities with our purpose built sixth form centre, which offers a very pleasant environment in which to work. The students appreciate the feel of being in an ‘adult’ part of the building and enjoy their space.

We nurture individual strengths within our students and as well as encouraging them to achieve academically we encourage them to explore a wide variety of interests within and beyond the school curriculum. Our aim is to develop thoughtful, kind and considerate adults, who will not only contribute to the school but also to the wider community. Sixth form students work closely with younger students in many ways, mentoring and supporting them, and also have provided support for other school sixth-forms, working alongside their students to develop a strong student ethos. Students’ personal development and happiness are very important to us and our extensive programme of extra-curricular activities supports this process, with excellent provision in Sport, Music and Drama.

As a rural school we accept every student who lives in our catchment area, with increasing applications from other areas and are oversubscribed. We are an inclusive school community with students from a wide variety of different social and cultural backgrounds as well as students with special educational needs and disabilities and we are passionately committed to the achievement of every individual. We welcome external applicants, who are invited to spend a day with us in Year 11.

Guilsborough became an Academy in March 2011, under the new system for outstanding schools and is a Specialist Technology College which means that we have a special commitment to sharing knowledge and understanding of Design Technology, Mathematics and Science within our school, with our partner schools and with the local community. Our results in these subjects are ‘outstanding’. We have recently being accredited as an International School.

Best Wishes Christine Staley

About us

Introduction from the Head of Sixth Form

Mohandas K. Gandhi made the statement: "Be the change you want to see in the world"; we have made this statement the foundation of our vision and values. In a world of growing challenge, we believe that it is possible for every member of our sixth form to be someone who makes a positive difference to transform their community for the better. We expect this to be reflected in personal responsibility for the school community, approaches to study, the school environment, attendance, and of course, high academic achievement. We believe that everyone has an important contribution to make and we see this reflected in the friendly, supportive yet challenging environment that is Guilsborough Sixth Form"

Introduction from The Head Boy and Girl

Guilsborough School Sixth Form has a great learning environment in which all students with the right levels of dedication can excel by taking advantage of the opportunities offered. There are plenty of individuals always willing to help optimise your sixth form experience. In the sixth form we promote an experience in which every student can be involved through a variety of different committees. The committees on offer have been selected so that all members of the sixth form can tackle issues affecting the students, these include:

Social and fun, Sports, Going global, Environment, Communications,

and Linc.

By working with each other the students can move

towards a better, fairer sixth form in which all students can flourish and feel listened to. Because we feel that when a student is integrated and important to the sixth form as a whole they achieve their full potential academically.

The main aspects of sixth form life, which students enjoy revolve around the large variety of facilities. Our study room provides a calm and spacious study environment. Our sixth form kitchen provides freedom with a kettle, microwave and fridge allowing students to turn themselves into the next Gordon Ramsay (without the swearing). Providing a flexible working atmosphere is key to helping all students thrive. For example, through talking to the school canteen, it is now opened earlier to cater for a sixth form students busy work schedule.

Finally we would like to wish the very best of luck to all students, whether they are considering the sixth form path or not. We would thoroughly recommend Guilsborough Sixth Form to anyone wanting to further their school education, and hope too see as many of you as possible in the coming academic year.
