Welcome to Kettering Science Academy

Opportunity, responsibility and success characterise the Sixth Form of Kettering Science Academy. Over the last few years our Sixth Form has established an excellent record of success and has a proven success rate in both A level and Level 2 courses, with many of our students exceeding their target grades. In line with our recent Academy status our students have also been set new standards of expectation; wearing the smart sixth form uniform at all times and organising their studies in such a way that they achieve their academic potential. The Sixth Form is led by our head boy and head girl, who along with their deputies and our prefect team, are expected to support and act as role models for our younger students. We offer a wide range of courses and provide a varied curriculum which allows each student to express their talents and reach their potential. All our students are also supported academically and pastorally so that they can be successful at what can be a demanding phase of their education. In addition to the lesson contact time, students are expected to devote a further two hours of private study to each course taken.  Students are also expected to offer one session per week to complete voluntary work within and beyond the Academy community. Each student is allocated a personal tutor, with whom, they will have contact on a daily basis. The tutor will help them with all aspects of Sixth Form life, from helping to organise and review study programmes to assisting with any academic or personal problems. We also have a Key Stage 5 study manager who is responsible for monitoring the progress of all students. The study manager also will meet with parents, offer mentoring and signpost students to other sources of assistance.

About us

There is a proven success rate in both A level and level 2 courses, where actual achievement grades exceed target grades. The A2 pass rate for 2009 was 98%, with some students achieving four grade A’s at A level. KSA has specialist social and study facilities for use by sixth form students. KSA provides a familiar environment, dedicated staff ensuring a smooth transition from key stage 4 to post 16 education. There is daily contact with a personal tutor ensuring full support at both subject and pastoral level. There is opportunity for students to be proud of their achievements, be set challenging but achievable targets and make informed choices about their future. KSA staff are experts in their subject and are there to provide personalised tailored learning for our sixth form students. We aim to create a learning atmosphere that relies on clear expectations and mutual respect.  Sixth form students are expected to work and study independently.  There are opportunities for students to study in the company of friends and staff in a supportive environment. KSA aims to provide open access to all sporting and leisure facilities, with the opportunity to participate in sporting activities at a competitive level. We aim to create an atmosphere that creates happy, socially confident young adults who have experienced growth and excellent academic success.

Additional support

The move from studying GCSEs in Key Stage 4 to studying Advanced Level subjects in the Sixth Form is often demanding. It is important, therefore, that the students entering Sixth Form education have confidence in their environment and have access to subject and pastoral support at all levels and at all phases, whether they are studying for academic or vocational qualifications.

Personal Tutor

In the Sixth Form every student is allocated a Personal Tutor with whom regular contact is guaranteed on a daily basis.

The Tutor is responsible for:

·        Reviewing student’s programmes of study

·        Overseeing student performance, providing regular feedback on progress and attainment.

·        Providing help in organising time to meet work demands and assignment deadlines.

·        Assisting with student’s educational or personal problems.

·        Coordinating reports and subject profiles, which are discussed, negotiated and completed each term.

·        Providing references for both employment purposes or in support of applications to institutions of higher education.

Learner success

“The 6th form offers opportunities for us to take on more responsibility around the school, especially with the prefects and head boy/girl jobs” “The support that we get is brilliant, the new monitoring process allows us to discuss our progress and how we can influence our learning” “There is a more balanced relationship between staff and students, there is respect between both.  There is more individual one to one help” “The library and study room is an area where we can go during our study periods to use the ICT facilities or complete quiet study” “There is a nice relaxed environment allowing you to learn in lessons.  Teaching staff are always willing to help you – we have a lot of good support”
