Facilities available

We have recently invested in the facilities for our sixth form students because we want you to be a part of a vibrant and caring community with access to the best teaching and facilities.

Careers/Study Facilities

We are aiming to extend the current study facilities available in the Sixth form. We currently have facilities in the library, Technology area, PE, Sixth Form Block and City Learning Centre. Private study is an essential element within the sixth form. It is expected that students will take responsibility to organise their study time and meet deadlines. Progress will be monitored termly, with targets being set to ensure students strive towards their potential. The School Careers Library is open throughout the school day and may be used by students at all times. It contains an extensive range of information about careers and higher education. A wide range of reference books together with university and college prospectuses can be accessed. Throughout Years 12 and 13, students can request an interview with the school’s career advisers

Student Guidance

Students are provided with information which will help them to make decisions about their future. A variety of external organisations and staff within school will assist with this process.

Additional support

Ambassadors

These are important positions of responsibility that Year 12 are able to apply for. Students holding this position will carry out varying responsibilities throughout school. The nature of the job may vary, but most ambassadors will also be assisting a Year 7 Form Tutor during registration. A position of responsibility does not only benefit the school but is also a useful experience when applying for a job or to go on to higher education. It will demonstrate that you have the ability to work independently and have shown a commitment towards the learning of others.

Specialist support for learning

A team of committed staff and external agencies provide dedicated support for pupils, either within the classroom or in our Learning Support Centre. Some pupils attend our early-morning breakfast club and after-school homework club, or extend their studies during the evening at the City Learning Centre. Homework is an essential part of our learning programme and pupils are encouraged to attend the homework club to access the ICT resources and additional help from staff.

Our experienced team of learning mentors work alongside individual pupils who, for a variety of reasons, need additional guidance to enable them to progress. We have an extensive mentoring programme, which involves a range of partners including local universities.

Pupils with particular talents and abilities are also given opportunities to develop these within their lessons and through an exciting range of enrichment activities.

Realistic and challenging targets are regularly set for all pupils, to encourage them to aim high. These targets and pupil's progress towards them are regularly reviewed and discussed with parents and the pupils themselves.

Post- 16 progress

Balby Carr's Sixth Form provides a lively and stimulating environment for Post- 16 studies. Our Sixth Form belongs to a partnership with other local providers, enabling us to offer a much broader range of vocational courses, as well as AS and A2-Level programmes. Courses are available for students of all abilities and interests, and our students have a very good record of obtaining places in Higher Education and employment.

Learner success

Our recent Ofsted inspection recognised the “improving effectiveness of the Sixth Form” in which students make “good progress” with “good teaching encouraging mature discussion by well informed students. The Sixth Form students at Balby Carr receive good careers education and guidance” and the number of students going on to higher education is increasing every year.
